The EXIF for the latest sample scene [night stars] on the teaser site says:

Creator Tool: Digital Camera Utility 5 Ver.5.5.0

So that's the version of PDCU that will probably ship with the camera. Since the current version of PDCU is v5.4.2, it doesn't sound like it will represent much of an update.

I don't care if it is called a kit lens or whatever. I want an amazing 24-105 f/4.

Like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-24-105mm-USM-Lens-Cameras/dp/B000AZ57M6/ref=sr_1...is+usm+af+lens
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-24-120mm-Vibration-Reduction-Cameras/dp/B003ZSHN...on+24-120mm+f4

Maybe these are not 'kit' lenses. But on the flagship FF, these are what should be the 'kit' lens. I hope Pentax comes up with something similar. For me, and I think a lot of landscape shooters f/2.8 (and the weight that goes with it) is not needed. An optically superb f/4 is just fine.

I doubt you will ever see such lens from Pentax

28-105/3.5-4.5 or 28-135/3.5-5.6 or 28-105/4-5.6 or even 28-200/3.5-5.6...I can believe.

24-120/4 - no...

I think FF zoom lenses till 200-300 mm will be like this

15-30/2.8 - 24-70/2.8 - 70-200/2.8

cheap versions
18-35/4-5.6 - 28-135/3.5-5.6 - 70-300/4.5-5.6

If your standards are so low, I bet they will be met. The Canon L is meh at best and the Nikon, is, well...
It's right on par with the DA*16-50 with the poor aspect being it's a full stop slower (so should be much easier to yield better results) and costs +40%, but still doesn't perform any better (vignetting is really bad). So price/performance wise it's half as good as the DA*16-50. And the latter already has critics.

No wonder Nikon customers are running away in huge amounts (-50% in Japan last year).

I am positive any new Pentax kit lens will outperform that.

Well, those are the preferred lenses of many landscape shooters I respect, but that's all I know about them. I just figured if those folks can make money shooting pretty pictures with them then they must be OK. But what do I know.

Anyway, I still have no use for a big heavy 24-70 f/2.8. I want a nice 24-105 or 115 or 120 or whatever with a constant f/4 aperture that does not weigh very much. Something with the same design philosophy as the old Pentax-F 24-50 f/4.

So you are confirming a 24-105 f/4 in Pentax livery?

A 24-105/4 is the only zoom lens for the K-1, in addition to the 150-450, that interests me (a lot BTW!). I don't need a max aperture of 2.8 in a zoom lens; rather have extra reach.
I also want a 24/1.4 for night time shooting...
