here's a question that hasn't been addressed: will the new battery grip sport the new "wheel" too? (seems to me it probably should if only to keep the ergonomics intact).

...following with that logic, there should also be an AF point selection joystick.

I think that would make sense in order to still support direct dial access to three shooting parameters even in portrait orientation.

However, I don't think it is necessary to go as far as replicating the four-way controller. That would make the grip rather bulky and the four-way controller on the camera works rather well when using the grip in portrait orientation. It requires a small adjustment of where the thumb needs to go, but I find it acceptable.

In contrast, changing the ordering / placement of the AF button, green button and AE-L button on the grip compared to the camera (as, oh horror, implemented by the D-BG5) is an absolute no-go, AFAIC. Muscle memory should be applicable independently of orientation. Yes, the four-way controller would be a small exception, but I never had a problem with it, whereas I absolutely know I'd go mental with a different button layout.

Here's to hoping that the K-1 will come with a grip that mirrors the camera buttons as closely as possible.

personally, I think the entire DSLR concept needs a redesign. I would like to see a more modular system much like a mini-Mamiya RB67 wherein the *sensor* is rotated not the body. In this way, the handle could always be in the same place regardless of shooting horizontally or vertically. Additionally I would like the LED standard position to be on the top of the camera rather than on the back (with the option to "flip it" to the back as needed) -- I loved shooting this way "back in the day". If they wanted to go full-hog, then offer both left-hand and right-hand modular grips so that both types of dexterity would be covered (also useful for when you break or sprain your wrist on your dominate hand).

Might be difficult to rotate the mirror/finder. Or would you like to have a mirror and prism designed for 36x36?

Regarding Michael's DSLR concept redesign comment- one of the most fundamental and crucial foundations for truly 'professional' ...per my humble opinion and paid freelance experience from back in the film era. Kevin

Wow....the Pentax FF finally breaks cover (for a short while, anyway).

It looks like a pretty serious machine. Certainly more than a K-3 with FF sensor: some serious engineering has been going on behind the scenes.

I just hope they've put as many hours into the AF logarithms....they really need to close the gap to Canikon with AF if this is to be a world beater.

Same as the K-3, if that's what you mean.

I like the idea of a square sensor (36 x 36) that you can use to select your orientation or even the shape of the image (square, rectangular). But I do understand that the image circle from the lens would have to be quite large to accommodate that sized square. Which brings me back to my earlier idea of a circular sensor, from which you select the size, shape, and orientation of the image.
