It seems like the main changes are the optical element and the coatings, so that could make a meaningful difference to the IQ. I guess we can expect a number of similar updates to the popular FA 645 lenses over time.
no WR or DC seems not smart to me.

Ron, the total yearly sales of digital cameras and backs is lower than 10,000 units. And, as you say, there is a cause behind the high price of 'full 645' 60 and 80 mpix digital backs.
So how many 645D and 645Z does Ricoh sell?

2200 USD vs 1600 USD - the weight of DFA is just 10 gram higher than FA...))
HD and new design of aspheric lenses costs 600 USD...Hmmmm

The production of 645D was 6000 cameras per year. Production period is appox.4.5 years.

That is the dream scenario. I don't believe they sold 25.000 units 645D.

It seems like the main changes are the optical element and the coatings, so that could make a meaningful difference to the IQ. I guess we can expect a number of similar updates to the popular FA 645 lenses over time.
Main changes seem to be:

- tweaked design (said to have been optimised for digital) of the glass molded aspherical lens
- HD and SP coatings
- 9 rounded aperture blades
- 10 grams heavier
- slightly more expensive (RRP of FA 645 is 1,665 excl. VAT; Japanese RRP of D-FA 645 is 250,000 excl. VAT ≈ 1,900).

If you are looking at the Japanese price, bear in mind that it won't actually sell for that price, and the US price won't be a direct currency conversion. As an example, the official price of the DFA24-70 was reported as 226,800 yen by the same source. When it was released the street price was immediately 160,000 yen and it's now about 150,000 yen. That same lens was announced at 1,299 USD from the beginning in the US.

But of course the price is going to be more than the outgoing model and users will have to decide whether the improvements are worth the extra investment.

And by the way, the current price for a new copy of the old lens is about 130,000 yen.

We don't know the sales of 645D...But I don't see any problem to sell 25 000 units. Japan's population is 127 million.
China's population is close to 1.4 billion. 645D was very popular in Japan and China.

To sell 25 000 cameras world-wide is not hard task.

Look, there are several users even at Russian Penta-club. Not professionals. Amateurs.
Don't forget that Pentax had problems with pre-orders - the demands for 645D was higher than 500 camera per month.
Some of users could get camera in several month after order.

Such news about 645D was well-known

The 70-200 has already been announced -it was announced on February 4th. There could be a notice concerning its actual launch, as there was one on June 17th concerning the push back of its availability, but it will probably be a brief note on the company website.

They sold some dozen in The Netherlands/Belgium. Only 21 645D are registrated on this forum. So at least they are not to many in area's for me to see that many.

Would be nice if China and Japan bought so many.

A lot of users never come at forums. Especially, professional users.

Our forum is just a small part of statistics.

In an interview they said that 645Z nearby doubled the sales over expectations. So does that mean they sell 12.000 of them a year?

I'm really surprised they haven't added a new form of AF silent motor yet the specs say it's a new lens design. It doesn't make sense.

Amazing to see the famous "green ring" make an apparition on a Pentax medium format lens, for the very first time
Red seems gone for good !
