Chris, really, you sold your Z because you have cause for concern about the direction of Ricoh.

Jeez.

Not only did they launch the Z, re-release all FA lenses into all markets for sale, released a 90 DFA portrait lens, a 28-45 weather sealed landscape lens, have a roadmap for replacing the 45-85 and 80-160 zooms, they dropped the price of the body to $6999, they released a pro support program, they worked directly with a 3rd party company to release a fast flash sync product to the market, now they did a cheap refresh of a FA lens amongst everything else they are working on.

Cause for concern, that's a bit of a cheap shot in my view. What more do people want, MF is a small user base and is treated accordingly.
I didn't sell my Z because I was concerned about Ricoh. I was getting fed up using dual cam setups once I had the resolution from the 5DSr's to keep me happy. Having 10K+ tied up in a system I was using less and less didn't seem practical or smart considering. What with the rumors of a full frame MF option in the works it seemed sensible to jump ship until a newer body becomes available.

I'm a strong advocate for Pentax / Ricoh but just like how I raved about the 645z in my online review that has convinced a lot of fence sitters to buy into the system (and still does) I'll be equally critical when I don't like something I see too.

They've done a lot as you say. If someone wanted to be crabby about it you 'could' say that the Macro was launched in 2012 and the ultrawide 28-45 was launched in August 2014. So 15 months later we have the refreshed 35mm? With the current lens spacing being in the 14-18 month time frame does that mean the 35mm is it for another year? (granted I don't think it is). The price drop is welcome but that's what comes from a maturing product and is something that happens across the board. The pro support program while welcome has had no mention yet of being extended to Europe (I waited 3 months for a lens to have some work done on it) and the flash solution is ace.

Frankly I'm excited what the future holds with Pentax, the full frame body looks great, but I do have a cause for concern with certain things because a camera system is just that, a system. If a certain component isn't that great then it brings the whole thing down with it. That has nothing to do with their financials and certainly isn't a cheap shot.

I actually visited your blog for a read and saw you were using 5Dsr bodies, and in fact I am looking at one for myself for longer lens work as the Z falls short there.

Like you said, there is some months between lens releases and me personally I can't wait for the 80-160 replacement and hope it's a 90-180.

We definitely live in a sector where there is no free lunch, there is no product that is all things to all people.

They can't even get their prices right!

Ricoh Imaging Americas Corporation website on Saturday: $1,099.95

Ricoh Imaging Americas Corporation website tonight: $1,599.95

B&H Photo Video still use the erroneous RRP for their own pricing: $1,096.95

Those who are interested in this lens, hurry up, this bargain won't last long!

Uups, thats a real bargain. Too good to be true...

Must be a mistake in my opinion. I pre-ordered mine by on official Pentax-Dealer to the announced price. But if I lived in the US I would try to order some for $1099...
Just checked with B&H and their buyers are saying $1096 is the correct price...but then again that's probably based on last week's info from Pentax.

It almost seems too good to be true.

It won't be true very long, considering the RRP in the Euro zone is €1,799 incl. VAT = €1,499 excl. VAT = $1,600.

I've had the pleasure of using this lens, Ricoh Imaging UK , have lent me a 645z over Christmas with a collection of lenses. I put the 35mm on when I was up in London recently with a friend and did a little bit of street with it.

here are some sample images.

Overall I think this is a great Medium Format wide angle, pin sharp, it does suffer a little from chromatic aberrations in high contrast areas, but its nothing Lightroom or Camera RAW cant easily sort.
Its light, its sharp and its fast to focus...

i'm placing my order...damn the expense. It might be fun to compare this to the Leica Summarit-S 35mm f/2.5 on my optics bench, I recall the current Pentax A 645 35mm gives the Leica lens a run for its money at f/8 - though the Leica lens beats the Pentax lens at wider apertures.

Are you getting it from Pentax Australia?

I see it on their site but it doesn't say HD in the title, but says HD in the description.

Let me know when you are ready, I may be able to get us both a deal from my local store as I have a good mate works there.

Will this 35 mm become the prototype for a new large apeture 35 mm for FF cameras - it happened with the 55 mm version couple years ago.

It did? The DA* 55mm f/1.4 and the DFA 645 55mm f/2.8 appears to be quite different.

I didn't catch your idea...Where do you see any connection with FF?

How could this lens, made many years ago for 645 film and redesign for new digital system, be the the prototype for FF?

MF is different system.
