I have a 12-24 Pentax and have taken thousands of photographs with it. It's a great lens. In fact Popular Photography called it a best in class.

It's way too cheap to be a Schneider lens, and it has far too much CA - In recent years Schneider has become well known among large format photographers for producing cost-no-object* lenses that offer performance without peer.

The 12-24 f/4 is based on an optical formula patented by Tokina.

All other lenses for which there is a Tokina version and a Pentax one (10-17mm f/3.5-4.5 fish-eye, 16-50mm f/2.8, 35mm f/2.8 macro, 50mm f/2.8 macro, 50-135mm f/2.8, 100mm f/2.8 macro and I might have forgotten some) are based on optical formulas patented by Pentax:

- 10-17mm f/3.5-4.5 fish-eye: patent JP-2007-94371, filed on June 12, 2006 (inventor:Jun Hirakawa), granted in 2007
- 16-50mm f/2.8: patent JP-2007-127989, filed in November 2005, granted in May 2007
- 35mm f/2.8 macro: patent JP-2008-257088, filed on April 9, 2007 by Hoya (inventor: Kato Koji), granted in 2008
- 50-135mm f/2.8: patent JP-2007-212830, filed on February 10, 2006, granted in 2007.

50 and 100mm f/2.8 macro are based on much older designs patented in the '80s, first used for the F series in 1987-1988.

I'll go by my experience with this lens and the view of Popular Photography. We'll have to agree to disagree.

Don't know about the 12-24 specifically, but least for some of the Samsung/Scneider lenses, this was merely a name-licensing arrangement.

Of course no K-mount and no A-mount. Tokina only wants to cater high volume mounts. They haven't even tried a mirrorless mount yet. When Tokina starts making E-mount we really have to worry about the DSLR

Being approved of, and being manufactured by are two completely different things. If the 12-24mm was a Schneider designed lens the price would easily be 3X what it currently is, it would be made to extremely high tolerances, it would have solid metal construction, and it would have a perfect 10 in the pentax forums lens reviews.

Correct, Samsung/Schneider in a similar vein to SONY/Zeiss do have a name licensing agreement, basically to cash in on the name really. Though most 35mm photographers born after 1980 will be scratching their heads over Schneider - their lenses never really took off in the 35mm market. But in medium and large format circles Schneider lenses are highly sought after, and are frequently preferred over Zeiss.

Do you know this for certain, or are you just reading advertising literature? In the Case of the Zeiss 85mm f/1.4 - yes that lens is clearly a zeiss design, and not just a minolta(R.I.P) re-badge. But apart from the AF, it isn't anything different from what anyone else can get from Zeiss as far as 85mm f/1.4 lenses go, it is just another planar 85mm f/1.4 put in an AF shell. Same goes to the 24mm,50mm, 135mm zeiss lenses.

No, I don't have anything I can cite, but I did specifically read something in which they specifically said they are not just lending their name.

Apparently, only the T/S 50 and 90mm are available in K-mount (B&H) : anybody to confirm it ? Any feedback?
These are potentially very interesting lenses if you get the funds.
That could even be an other reason for me to sell all my 645 stuff... quite "limited" in this respect save Zork proposals.
