They would have told that, just like they're doing it for the K-70. Instead, they're talking about a "newly designed" PRIME IV working at a ~50% faster operating frequency.

It could have been just a die shrink, that would make it more energy efficiŽnt so they could clock it faster.

Could be. But then, I would call that a "PRIME III+". Unless marketing decided they need a new version number.

I strongly bet that the baseband processor of the K1 is exactly the same as the one using in the K3. And the co-prossessor shown in the K70 as hardware accelerator was implemented in the K1 to cope with the larger 36Mp files. Now, they had this co-prossessor in the K70 because it's reuse, it cost them little in terms of development. Also, the SD card data rate are the same on K1 as it was in the K3, basically around 30Mbytes/sec.
Is writing that slow? That is K-5 speed. If the processor is the new version, then it is 50 % faster then the previous one. This means that a K-1 file (36mp) should processed in the same speed as with K-3 (24mp).

Have we heard anything from actual users??

Whatever card used , it's limited to about between 33Mbytes/s to 35Mbytes/s. Same as K3.

I think it's even slower than the K-3. it's more the K-5 speed. There is a thread with the writing speeds of the K1, its round about 25 MB/sec even with fast cards

see here www.pentaxforums.com/forums/190-pentax-k-1/322283-k1-write-speed-slowness.html

It is slower than K3 in terms of the time need to write files in the SD cards because K1 files are larger. But if you consider datarate, it's about the same. There are some figures on a SD/camera test site. K3 is rated around 30Mbytes/s, and as per the tests done by PF, K1 data rate is also in the 30Mb/s range. The newer FF cameras from competition rate twice that of the K1. But that's only an issue when shooting intensive bursts in FF mode, otherwise the write time of the K1 isn't a problem because chimping is taken for buffer memory instead of SD card, no need to wait for a SD write cycle to check your pictures, it's instant.

Imaging Resource, using Sandisk Extreme Pro 95's found it took 31 seconds for the K-1 to clear (which I assume translates as 'write to disk') it's buffer of 17 RAW DNG's.

They don't say what ISO they used for their throughput tests [ISO 100 images are way smaller than ISO 6400 images...], but on the basis of their tests they assess:

QuoteQuote:
Maximum throughput tops out at around 160MB/second, vs. around 200MB/second for the earlier, sub-frame Pentax K-3.) Likely the sensor itself is the limiting factor here, though, rather than the processor.
Pentax K-1 Review: Initial Test - Technical Info

So using fast UHS-1 SD cards still makes sense for the K-1, just like it does for the K-3.

copied from here www.pentaxforums.com/forums/190-pentax-k-1/322283-k1-write-speed-slowness.html

I did some measurements on my own:
No calculations of the camera, manual mode, RAW only, DNG, 1/8000sec, AF off, Time from first writing light to light off, Transcend R95 W60 MN/s 128GB SDXC I Klass 3
663 997 066 Bytes 17 pics 31.16 sec 21 MB/sec
592 739 598 Bytes 15 pics 29.53 sec 20 MB/sec
660 737 342 Bytes 17 pics 30,50 sec 21,7 MB/sec time from slowing down to end -2.6 sec => 23,681

Every card with a write speed above 30 MB/sec would be sufficient - all cards which are outperforming a K-3 would be really good enough for the K-1. It seems, that the K-1 is slower than a K-3

Even with this slow writing speed I'm very happy with this camera, there are lots of benefits with this camera

I did the same tests with the same conditions with K3.

And I'm not talking about the times to write a picture , I_m taking about the transfer speed in MB/sec
my typical file sizes:
K3 pef 31,5 MB (Average of 1100 pictures)
K1 dng 42 MB (Average of 2500 pictures)

Yup, Pentax still does not support full UHS-1 which is around 95mb/s while there are UHS-2. XQD. and Cfast 2.0

Just wait until these guys perform the test with K-1.

IMO Imaging Resource meant 160Mb/s and 200Mb/s which would be right in with other calculations. Mb/s not MB/s

Those where about megapixels/s.
