You think that Pentax hasn't been late to market on most things? He's right. They were late with autofocus, late with digital and now are late with full frame. Pentax ownership hurt it over the past 5 years. If Ricoh had owned it since 2005, there would be a full frame out by now. Probably in the 2011 - 2013 timeframe following the K5.

It doesn't mean that they don't make great cameras or lenses. They've just been hurt by the timing over the years.
Of course he's right, but if that's all he can say, then he's either ignorant or contriving an argument to bolster Nikon's flagging fortunes by belittling other contenders. In doing so, though, he descends to the level of "shock jocks" or political bigots, who are wilfully blind to the merits of their opponents in order to talk up their favourites. He's not as blatantly asinine as someone like Ken Rockwell, but he's hardly objective either.

None of that means he can't be right sometimes – even Pravda or News Ltd told the truth occasionally.

PS: please don't put words in my mouth. I never even hinted that Pentax hadn't been late.

If 645z hadn't been such a smashing success that it sucked up all the production and R&D resources we'd have had an FF last year.

But they were late on 645.

If I remember correctly, Thom Hogan also described the K-3 as the D400s that Nikon should have made. Does that mean Nikon is still late with the D400, given that the D300s was released six years ago?

Actually, autofocus was invented by Kodak. Sure did them a lot of good.

You're right, he does seem fairly complimentary of Pentax in this article from two years ago on the release of the K-3 (including acknowledging Pentax's extensive DA lens lineup; he always harps on Nikon for not treating their DX lens line seriously): Meanwhile, Meet the Pentax D400 | byThom | Thom Hogan

And yes, they still don't have a D400.

IBIS being bad for an optical viewfinder is a pretty lame criticism though. When has anyone ever said "Damn the shake reduction! My careful handheld framing is now off because of a five-pixel shift from image stabilization!"

I'm not sure if it's about composition, so much as it is about being able to place a focus point on a target and keep it there. With long lenses and IBIS (or no stabilization) that can be pretty hard to do.

That's a good point, but he clearly says "The problem with sensor-based IS in a camera with an optical viewfinder is that the framing of the final image won't be precisely what you thought it was,"

On the other hand, lens stabilisation decreases images microcontrast...

There is also one point where Nikon has been lagging behind Pentax in recent APS-C DSLR features : SD cards in their flagships. Neither D80 nor D300/s did have that standard, that has now almost killed down CF cards.

Not bad result for the subject that has been resold two times. Some vanished after the first selling.

Forgive my ignorance, but is it really possible that your composition will change once you've made the shot without moving the camera because of IBIS?

You risk loosing the edges when using very long lens/ very tight framing, because of body's movements.
So in practice a less than 0,001 occurence probability....
More-over, tight framings are generally not compatible with artistic shots.
Finally, if you use a strong tripod with whimberley or alike, you reduce the risk to close to zero.
So imho, this is an exagerated argument.

Compared to user shake the risk is negligible.

I think the shake may come after the User seeing the shot in instant review
