PDCU is a version of SilkyPix that Pentax issues with their cameras. It allows the development of RAW photos on your computer and allows the application of the same jpeg settings that are available in-camera to your RAW files. It also has Pentax lens profiles built in and for K3 II owners, the ability to process pixel shifted RAW images.

Nowadays, the software is called Digital Camera Utility, or Ricoh Digital Camera Utility. In the old times, the software was called Pentax Digital Camera Utility of PDCU. PDCU has been supplied with the K-7, K-5, K-3 and K-3ii.
Thanks for the quick response and explanation.

hello, somebody kowns how to install PENTAX Digital Camera Utility on a mac from a K-5 cd ?
Because the K-5 cd version can't work with Intel Mac so I can't install the software and make the update ... I call Ricoh/Pentax hotline and they say they'll call me back when they have the answer but it's about four month now and they didn't give me any sign

Do people actually use these Silkypix apps? I tried once or twice over the years, and it was a purely miserable experience, just a garbage and unpleasant experience all the way thru. A poorly designed app with a horrendous workflow and interface. All I use is Lightroom, and I can't imagine anyone using anything but Lightroom or Capture One for file management and RAW photo editing.

I'm sure the FOSS people will be here soon to tell you how great Darktable and The GIMP are and how you are a terrible person for using commercial software.

Only reason I use free software is because I can't afford LR.

Not at all. I use gimp because I'd rather spend money on Pentax than on Adobe.

For the benefits of everyone, there seems to be a number of issues with DCU 5.4.2. At least 3 Pentaxians including myself experienced severe crashes with the version 5.4.2:
Crashes with Digital Camera Utility 5.4.2

I encourage everyone with issues to report them in the above thread. Thank you in advance.

just read page 1 of this Thread.
You dont need a CD at all! you just have to name a volume odr a SD card on your desktop with the name of the original K-3 CD and the updater is working and installing the compleat software.
Name it: "S-SW140" and run the updater. It has no effect to the data on the named volume, so you can use what you want.

Yes.

I like the output that PDCU gives, though I admit that the interface isn't great. I like the Silkypix interface - it works for my workflow better than most converters - but I prefer the output from PDCU. I like the output from DxO, and the
interface isn't bad - that's currently my favourite for balance of output/usability. But for some shots, I will still use PDCU.

That software is interesting in order to treat images the way the device would have done it "in body".
Example with Pentax Q :

Totally agree. I've tried to use it several times but every version so far was broken. Either adjustments take several seconds of 100% cpu (beachballing) or - like the current version - after every adjusrment the viewer switches to a 200% crop at the top left of the photo. Strange stuff happening.
That's sad because the image quality is excellent and right up there with Capture One.

I agree. I'm not a huge fan of the "freebie" stuff that gets provided with cameras, but at least some of the stuff other manufacturers provide is more usable. Olympus for example. Others had at times provided "lite" versions of existing commercial software. Couldn't they at least license a special version of some of the excellent open source stuff out there?

It just seems to me that life as a photographer is about wrangling tens of thousands of photos. Lightroom is not that expensive. I'm still on version 4. The tools and the speed with which I can use them are invaluable. The other fundamental upside is the library organization, file handling from import to export. My whole photographic world is shooting raw and pulling everything into and thru Lightroom. I just can't imagine wasting my time with these lesser apps that don't even help me organize my photo world. It seems costly and wasteful and frustrating. Time is money...

[edited]

I see that some of these apps DO handle file libraries to some degree... Didn't know that...
