I just had a thought, it's a visual shutter release. wave your hand over it and it releases. Great for tripod shooting. Or a focus point selection pad or both!

This rear wheal feels right like a "turn and push" buton.
I bet we will be able to use it also for AF position selection

If it's just a rotary dial, I don't see how it may be used as an AF point or even AF zone selector.

Simple : you could define (using the separate AF selector) the size of AF area by group of sensors, then this wheel would just pass from one group to the next one , and you could lock/unlock the choosen group when pressing on the top of the wheel.

The fact that it has prominence on the right side of the camera must mean that it has a significant value to the camera's operation. Perhaps it taking some of the workload off of the rear buttons and adding other features as well.

it might theoretically work, but it would have to be on the white dot of the main selector dial as a sort of default position, and I suspect the white dot is simply an 'off' position so that you don't accidentally change settings

Sounds too complicated. Trying to keep an eye in the viewfinder to track subject, use AF mode switch on left of camera body to select AF mode (whilst also supporting the camera/lens and adjusting zoom/focus), then use AF selector on rear of camera to select an AF point/zone, then toggle top rotor dial to choose AF zone, then press top dial button to activate selected zone, then start pressing shuttter button. Too much finger/hand activity needed all over the camera.
