Place Your Bets!!!

Alright, lots of rumors about what we are going to see at photokina. So place your bet in the poll.

(Your level of actual knowledge doesn't matter, you can use the information that you garnered from your sister-in-laws' aunt's stepson's dogs discussion with a pet food salesperson if you wish (about my level of actual knowledge)

anyway heres what seems to be the hot favourites (+ #4 the wildcard)

(you can have more than 1 pick)

I guess it's a major difference between something being "announced" like Sony has A900 and with a launch date like an year from then or a camera almost ready to ship and presented in it's final stages. Pentax could announce it's interest for a FF camera (in the future) and add some DFA(*) lenses on the roadmap but in terms of what actually will be the next camera my bet is something which is not in your pool: a faster shooter, AF system improved, with new processor (like Prime 2) and the same body and 14,6 Mp sensor as K20D.

I am feeling like a big spender today so instead of 2 cents I'll gonna go for a full 4!

I have to agree with RaduA above. New and improved K20D, with higher fps, better AF, tweaked live view etc. Something to directly compete with the Canon 40D and the Nikon D300.
I don't see them going for a FF camera or a medium format. The dark horse for me would be a stripped down entry level, but I personally find that doubtful.

Realistically, I would place my money on 'no new camera'. That is the story that I am fearing the most, and if so, then I will seriously consider to jump ship (how much I like Pentax doesn't matter then.)

Taking into consideration the slow but steady drop in price for both K20 and K200 the whole masterplan of Pentax it's starting to reveal itself.

In Photokina time (september if I am not wrong) the line-up will be like this:

- entry level - K200D - vastly superior in build quality, at least on par in IQ, slightly less so in buffer size (the single limitation I find) to the others entry level - price 500-600 USD / Euro tops for 18-55 II kit;
- mid level K20D - totally superior to 450D, presumably D90 - price level 800-1000 USD / Euro WITH A CHOICE OF KIT LENS from 18-55 II and 17-70 SDM;
- top level - K2D - a K20D with the before mentioned upgrades which will probably obliterate 40D and most likelly close the gap to D300 where K20D was lagging. Price 1400-1500 USD / Euro with 17-70 Kit lens.

If I am right then I forsee great times ahead for Pentax and us pentaxians!

"I want" as in "a gift" or "I want" as in "I'll pay 2500 Euro for it"?

This is exactly why Pentax won't come out with such a camera because many say "I want" and very few will actualy pay for it. Very bad business decission!

I'll settle for gift if I can't get the money to buy it. At the moment I have ~40% of the funding required.

The 5th option instead

I think neither of those apply. We need a fifth option. A higher than K20D grade with a new compatible mount.

I understood from the Da* 60-250 threads that you shoot mostly tele. If so buying a FF would mean extremely expensive lenses (I saw a 600/4 Nikkor for like 10000 USD). In the end I would like a MF but ...

I´m a optimist

A entry level Samsung GX1000(or Pentax).
A Pentax K20D Super(with better liveview and more...).
And a Pentax K5D(same sensor as K20D, but faster, improved AF, 2 batteries, under 1kg and more... = a Nikon D300 killer) at Photokina.
Then a little later a Pentax 645D...
