Pentax DSLR sales Japan BCN 2016 Report

According to the BCN report for 2016, Pentax DSLR sales in Japan are at 6.7%. That's up 2.2% from last year, which was 4.5%

BCN Japan 2016 Awards (2015 Data): Open Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review

Last year's, so you can see the difference. Canon's gone up, Nikon's gone down, Pentax has gone up. No surprise there.
On the plus side, Pentax is rising in leaps and bounds compared to Canon - a 2.2 point increase is an almost 50% more!

Wow, I just noticed, Olympus has overtaken Sony in Japan!! Fascinating...

EDIT: for your pleasure, the google translated original BCN webpage - go to page two for the details on camera stuffs

Olympus doing better than Sony in mirrorless is a surprise.

And what is this 'PFU' company dominating scanner sales?

Fujitsu. They've had big success in recent years because their scanners are said to be easier to use to digitize paper documents to share with smartphones, iPads and so on. People in Japan have trouble storing all the books and manga that they want to keep, so there's been a bit of a boom in scanners optimised for this.

Regarding Sony, I don't remember ever seeing them in the number one spot in Japan. Olympus has always been on top, and when you add Panasonic, m4/3 is the clear market leader. Canon is interesting. I actually think the M3 is a pretty nice camera.

I have to say I'm a bit surprised to see Casio being into the top three for compacts, though.

I think Ricoh has benefited more than Nikon and Canon from Sony effectively quitting the "DSLR" game. I guess their A-mount stuff was categorised as DSLR.

Note than Canon sell more mirrorless than Fuji, Samsung or Panasonic, too.

FWIW, a claim is that these BCN rankings are just the 50% of the market that are certain retail outlets.

Interesting figure, we can expect Ricoh Imaging will at least getting 10% the market share of DSLR by end of this year.

Japan is a strange market. Olympus winning is great. The general market not only crossen towards full frame, but apperrently also smaller then aps-c. Why they are fan of canon mirrorless is a mistery for the West.

Great move from Ricoh. The market is 10 % smaller then 2015, but still a growth of 1/3th in one year is very good. I wonder if this is the succes of K-S2 or other models?

To put some perspective to Nikon going downhill......

Ricoh sold about 60.000 dslr in 2015.

Nikon sold about 60.000 dslr less in 2015 then in 2014! That is just the Japanese market wich is 10 % of the world market.

Could be because of their incredibly successful selfie camera.

Casio does great indeed. I guess that Sony's SLT's are maybe counted as dslr and those sales are very low.

I heard that model was successful, but I don't think they sell it in Japan. You can see the Casio models currently available in Japan in this list.

It's interesting that they have more models of compact than any maker other than Canon.

I think you're right about Sony SLT sales because they haven't even released the latest one in Japan.

I noticed that the top three DSLR brands account for as much as 99,6% of the market. Only 1 in 250 dslr cameras are not labelled Canon, Nikon or Pentax. I guess thats the Leicas and Hasselblads.
But look at mirrorless. The top three brands account for only 72,9%. That must mean there are many notable players in the sub 13,6% mirrorless market.
The top three compact brands account for 66,3% of the total.

And Sony's SLTs, the sales of which are marginal in Japan (their latest camera, the Alpha 68, wasn't even launched on their domestic market).

Indeed there are: Panasonic, Ricoh Imaging (Pentax Q), Nikon (One series), Fujifilm (X series) to name a few.
