Let's just say in the Corporate world in general, not in a particular country. I feel a bit of presumptuousness from your part but i'm not here to spark a debate.

Probably not of good heart alone, but given the time when that happened (unsure economic times, global recession, contracting markets etc) and the fact they already had an optics division (true that less developed and with less heritage) my hunch tells me, business interests aside, they also didn't want a legendary name, one of their own, go down the drain. And because they had the money to lift Pentax up from the mud, they did it. We, in the western world, where it's eat or be eaten, can't fully digest these attitudes and your slightly cynic remark with the "good heart" proves it.
