Not sure how well the tiny top-plate LCD would work out. I rely on the one on my K-3 II all the time, and almost never need to use the back screen to check settings while shooting. The one on the K-1 looks like something of the sort used on the Nikon Df.

what do you need to know from shot to shot that isn't in the viewfinder?

There is a top screen, just dark in this image. It is to the left of the unspecified black dial

There's speculation that the 'third-wheel' controls the information visible in the top LCD. Info is context-grouped.

Press the domed button to change the view - scroll the wheel to change the setting.

I use the VF for framing and focussing and may check shutterspeed. Top screen is a lot more comfortable when changing settings.

Has anyone thought of asking (Ricoh - Pentax) whether this camera will have a "de-crippled" mount ?
I thought this was a pretty hot debate in the past ... ?
Perhaps not a concern to anyone anymore ?

Exactly. I use the top screen every time too -- Through adjusting the settings before I even look through the VF, usually as I'm moving towards a scene.

I'm very interested in how the top panel functions on this body. A crucial element for me.

OK, put the other way, what's the problem with using the rear screen?
