It's apparently an original design but perhaps not one from Ricoh Imaging. I'm currently digging into it.
So probably made by Tamron as well? Would they do custom jobs? The fact that it's 5.6 at the long end (Canonikon have 3.5-4.5 versions as well). Probably means it's not very big or heavy. A true kit lens.

Not necessarily / Yes, for instance the Zeiss Batis Sonnar T* 85mm f/1.8 relies on an optical formula patented by Tamron.

Why 28-105? 24 is the new 28 and has been for years

most people are assuming that they don't want to cut into sales of the 24-70mm

In some ways, I would prefer a Pentax natively designed wide angle lens. That said, if Pentax is going to rebadge a lens, they could certainly do a whole lot worse than the Tamron. Since Hoya showed Jun Hirakawa the door, way back when, who then joined Tamron - it would be nice to find that he might have played a part in this lens. Perhaps he was able to sneak some pixy dust in to the design. It certainly does compare VERY favorably with the Nikon 14-24/f2.8 with the reputation of being one of the very best wide angle lenses designed. Sharpness is not everything. Reviews show a very nicely balanced lens across all of its characteristics. Plus, it is also WR.

The Tamron goes for $1200, with the Nikon going for $1900 - so hopefully, Pentax will price is more in line with the Tamron.

Why I stay with Pentax? I read somewhere that a sensor had to reach the 80Mp mark in order to approach the 200ISO grain size. So Takumar glass formulas were designed for a grain size of Kodachrome 25. Current lens design is not as stringent because it does not need to be. Takumars and SMCs may not have auto-focus but the resolution charts published by magazines place them wayyyyy ahead of what any manufacturer is producing today. There are millions of gems out there, cheap or low cost compared to current prices for "modern" lenses and only Nikon and Pentax are back compatible with their legacy lenses without adapters.

Since these lenses are Tamron rebadged lenses, maybe we will see more Tamron labelled lenses for the k-mount.

I would be inclined to say much the opposite - Ricoh and Tamron would be more likely to sign some sort of treaty by which Tamron does not take lens sales away from Ricoh/Pentax and will be compensated with licence fees for the rebadged flagship lenses. If anything we will see more Tamron designs rebadged as Pentax where it's necessary to fill gaps in a hurry.

Where Tamron MAY be allowed to compete is in the production of lenses for which Ricoh sees no particular place in the roadmap.

Sigh, I would like to see the 150-600 in the k-mount. I guess I'll have to pray for sigma to make the 150-600 sport for the k-mount.

I think you need to look at what people are saying about the 24-70. I've not read anything bad about it at all. And I've had the 17-50 (multiple copies), the 70-200 and the 90 2.8. The excellent copies of the 17-50 were the best in its range (I have a solid 16-50 DA* now). The Tamron 70-200 is simply great, and worth the money that it costs. The 90 2.8 macro is an incredible lens also. I'm sorry you haven't had great luck with Tamron, but I sure love my 70-200, and the 90 2.8 was stellar. I am considering going back to the Tamron 17-50 over the 16-50 because of weight.

My 2 cents. But I've read nothing but stellar reviews of the 15-30 and the 24-70. Tamron has upped its game since they designed the PK 17-50, for sure.

Pentax-D FA 28-105mm f/3.5-5.6 ED DC WR

Could this be an updated version of the smc 28-105 f/3.2-5.6, although they would have to use some type of coating, likely HD.

For those complaining about the tamron rebadge of the 24-70, isn't that lens supposed to be the best of the best currently, even compared to Nikon and Canon's first party offering?

Also currently on sale for other mounts at 929 usd after 2 rebates.

I wonder how long it takes for the Pentax version to reach a sub 1k price? That's pretty much my limit for a lens..

Sound logic when you think about it. Same reason the APS-C kit lens is 18-55 and not 17-55 when the 16-50 and 16-85 are around.

I think that is going to take a while..the lens is still new, and eventually when the K1 is out, sales will go up, and there is not that much competition around with the quality of this lens.
