Manufacturers are always pessimistic on SD capacity. They always assume you will only take picture where the lowless compression will struggle and you'll get always the biggest size.

My K3, 24MP, 14bit is giving 30MB on average. That mean 45MB on average for 36MP 14 bit, and so depending of the formating a alike, I would expect arround 160 Raws.

Anyway, if one has 1800$ camera, he can likely invest into 2 64GB SD cards or 4 32GB SD cards as to have an autonomy of something like 2500 raws. Going for a good brand would cost between 50-100$ for the bunch depending of how fast you want the cards to be. Not bad.

As for storage, 2TB is less than 100$, and that's more than forty thousand raws

It's because they get sued for false advertising and capability if they assume "the best." But no one sues when they get more than they were promised, just less.

I guess car manufacturers don't feel this is a big issue for the funny quote they provide for their engine consumption figures. Since Ecology and Climat change is trendy, official car consumption dropped quite a bit on the specs but the actual consumption on new cars look to be the same as 10 years before. Many claim less than 4l/100km or 100km per gallon, but I never encountered a car owner that managed that.

Back to photography and camera, I think they are conservative and don't care because they don't make the cards themselves.
