They didn't consider a mirrorless at first, to "settle" for a DSLR; they were unsure which way to go.

Challengers | PENTAX K-1 Special site | RICOH IMAGING
As I understand they inclined to mirrorless, but the plans were changed by Pentaxian.

Like LEICA, if they support past lenses by keeping the same mount, or providing the proper adapter, they keep their loyal base.

Personally, if I had any voice in the matter, my opinion would have been...
  • First - build a FF dSLR - there was really no way around this option as an initial step. Not doing this the Pentax community would have melted down.
  • Second - under the Ricoh a GX based FF fixed lens camera. This is essentially a FF mirror-less in sheep's clothing.
  • Third - if / when a FF mirror-less is necessary, either under Pentax or Ricoh replaced the fixed lens on the above (option 2) and put on a new lens mount for an interchangeable mirror-less lens system. The third option is essentially building a mirror-less lens library.

Oh, yes. You are right. I was reading before this article another article on Canon forum in which is said that the new advanced Canon mirrorless will have a full frame sensor. And with this thought in my mind I didn't see that in this article no one mention about a full frame mirrorless from Canon/Nikon.

No but in order for it to be high end and an answer to the A7 series, it would need to be.

A very interesting interview of the K-1's development team found at Digital Camera Watch:

Not if the wording is accurate, i.e. "the product planning team was initially unsure about which system to pursue" as opposed to "the product planning team initially wanted to pursue a mirrorless system". Being unsure of which alternative to pursue doesn't imply a bias towards one alternative.

They thought even about PENTAX LX version and they said that mirrorless wasn't considered.
Google Translate

Because they are proud of being pioneers of SLR cameras in Japan and want to continue tradition...

I would have thought girls to be more with mirror(s) than mirrorless .

I doubt any price drop in Canikon is because of the K-1; most likely it's to make room for their upcoming new cameras

I agree. Everybody seem to be upgrading their system. Here in the Philippines, the D7200 is sold at a much cheaper price than the the K-3II. Maybe the price drop is due to the coming of the D500 and probably more.
