Slightly off topic, but does Pentax/Ricoh own all rights to its old FA designs? Assuming it does, does it make sense to dust off some old designs and bring these lenses back? Or has digital changed the design parameters enough that they would need to revamp these designs anyway and starting from scratch, or licensing from Tamron, makes more economic sense?

no idea. but i would imagine only small changes are needed - perhaps a splash of ED glass and especial element here and there to improve CA etc

Thats a good point, possibly from left to right:

D-FA* 70-200 / D-FA 150-450 / D-FA 24-70 (peeking at the back) / D-FA 15-30mm / Unknown (possibly 85mm) / D-FA 28-105 (Prototype)
According to the line up in dpreview, it looks like the 28-105 is taller than the 15-30mm... So I would say that the 28-105 is not on the picture...

That teaser looks a lot like the 35mm from Tamron

Ricoh is definitely entering the lens-shaped coffee cup market.

According to data on these lenses, 15-30 is 144 mm long and 28-105 is 87 mm.
I guess that the hood on 15-30 is fixed so the length of it is including hood.

The lenses on the line up are not correctly scaled.
Just check the difference in lens mount size between the lenses lined up.

My gut feelings tell me it's not quite that easy. Putting in any sort of odd new element that wasn't there before would require recalibration of the entire optical pathway, how things change at different focusing distances and (for zooms) focal lengths. Even with computers it's not going to be easy. And then once you've calculated all that, you have to redesign the mechanisms that move them, recalculate the lens correction algorithms, etc. It's probably far easier just to put HD coatings on them, dress them in new external skins, throw some gaskets in against the rain and snow, and call it done. Otherwise it's easier to start with a clean sheet of paper.

The more I look at it, the mystery lens on the right looks like the DFA 28-105mm.

My thought to. Tamron is also working on some new lenses and 85mm/f1.4 is one of them. Maybe they agree to bring all tamron lenses in a Pentax coat.

Well that would be one way to let Jun Hirakawa to design Pentax-(labeled) lenses.

I realise that, but it would also be an 'easy' fix to turn around a quick lens release. Based on one of those lenses with upgraded DC motor, quickshift, HD coating etc.[/URL]
Absolutely. I've been lobbying for Ricoh to re-release the DA 35 and DA 50 with DC, WR and HD for some time now. Raise the price a bit, add a 24 and maybe metal mounts, and you've got yourself a very affordable line of high quality primes that both FF and APS-C users would be salivating over

I do not see the point of the Tamron 35 f1.8 when in the tradition of Pentax they allready market a 35 f2 that is more compact and appears in the new 'lens' for the system' advert photos, allong with the 35 f2.4, which of course are theirs to fully profit from, my monies still on a f1.4 85mm and a 135 f2.8, the standards are allready there 50 1.4 and 55 1.4 sdm and the wideangles are in the new 15-30 zoom.

I think the larger prime looks a bit small to be an 85mm F1.4 doesn't it - that lens was a monster wasn't it? I do hope it is though and it's interesting that it is pretty widely regarded as perhaps the best 85mm F1.4 ever built by anyone and even better than the FA 77mm F1.8 limited. In addition wasn't the FA*85mm F1.4 one of the first lenses they showed with the K1 on the teaser site. With that in mind I would have thought the old design is very much good enough even for a latest generation camera and would still be a world class lens even in its original configuration but with weathersealing and some new coatings. If I was Pentax I would certainly be putting that one back into production.

My only slight regret is that I just bought the 77mm F1.8 and after a lot of deliberation I decided to keep it. Given the choice I don't know which I would choose - the 85mm is the better portrait lens but it's also much heavier and bulkier and less suited to travel and the confines of my rather small portrait studio.
The 77mm is a formidable portrait lens though - shot this with it only last week.

According to PhotoRumors, Tamron will release a 85mm f/1.8 in CaSoNikon mounts, but no Pentax (Tamron to announce a new SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD lens | Photo Rumors). So maybe they will release a 'Pentax' 85mm f/1.8 out of this lens. Asahiman said that a medium telephoto was on the way, It can be it.
