I agree, its crazy. They must be delusional about the value of VC or Canon/Nikon owners must be stupid, or a combination.
Pentax FA 77 has a list price of $900 no optical stabilization, no AF motor build in and it is an old design. Get real guys.
The Tamron will probably sell for 700-800 in stores and if you can use it wide open, I would prefer it over some wonnabe Sigma with huge dimensions and no image stabilization. Canon/Nikon design aslo carry lots of plastic and no IS. Price should match performance and not some specs. Leica Summicron 90 costs much more has only f/2 but rocks.

Tamron is doing a smart thing. They offer a line of affordable high-quality lenses with decent specs. F/1.8 is really a large aperture lens. Add optical stabilzation and you have something noone else can offer. f/1.4 is extreme, nice to have, but large, heavy, ...

In which parts are you expecting them to use plastic, and why are you convinced that is bad? (have you had bad experiences with plastic components, perhaps?)

all Pentax DSLRs today have in-body IS, so even if the Tamron one was made for Pentax, it wouldn't need the VC. And the Sigma isn't that bad, too. Additionally, 85mm is still pretty short for heavy shake reduction, unlike lenses ranging from, say 300mm and up...

Touch a Pentax Ltd lens and touch a Nikon prime lens. Tell me what is the differene in feel. Its more about haptics. Same for DA lenses and tele DA*.
Plastic can replace metal quite well and even provide better behavior than metal. For mass production of parts it is even cheaper. It is not easy to come up with a simple relationship between plastic and quality, but feel is part of quality. Open a Nikon 1.8/85 and you will see it is not as well made as a 1.4/85. Both housings use a lot of plastic. Open a Pentax DA and you woder about the amount of plastic gears inside...
