Now that the unicorn is, in fact, a (soon to be) ridable equine, can we please have some progress on the mirrorless (either K or Q) front?

Some minor questions relating to lenses.

1. The HD-DA 1.4x converter was announced as Full Frame capable, but now it is not? Why?
2. 85mm F1.4 like the mighty FA* version. It is on the horizon?
3. 135mm F2. A classic focal length, and would be the perfect portrait lens. Any chance?
3. Fisheye of around 15mm. Is this on the roadmap?
4. Tilt/shift. Pentax have never had this type, is it possible?
5. Finally, the FA*250-600mm F5.6 and the 600mm F4. Are they being looked into long term as D-FA* versions with weather sealing and silent motors (DC as opposed to SDM)

Lenses, lenses, lenses... What plans are in place to get 3rd party lens providers, i.e. Sigma, Tamron, etc., on board with the K-1?

They claim to have tethering and they do of a sort, and it is very good for remote control, but IMO tethering is not tethering if it isn't available via Lightroom?

Lightroom/Camera Raw camera profiles, why don't you just create them and provide them to be install in the Lightroom user area?

Generally I get the feeling that Pentax/Ricoh lack of 3rd party support isn't simple a case of small market share. I get the feeling that Pentax/Ricoh doesn't "play well" with others. What are their plans to get more support from all the various 3rd party providers? We'd all like to by original Pentax, but can't necessarily afford it.

Just some frustrations I'm feeling. I was almost out the door to Nikon, but the K-1 sounds fabulous and has partially roped me back in. However, the above issues still concern me.

Accommodating Muscle Memory

Unless a button remapping is already supported, will Ricoh consider a firmware upgrade that allows rotating the Green / AF / AE-L button mapping to AE-L / Green / AF (as shown in the alternate D-BG6 button layout poll)?

So far a majority of voters supported the alternative, rotated button mapping, most likely because it places two buttons on the grip in the same position as they are on the camera, whereas the current D-BG6 button layout only places one button on the grip in the same position (compared to the camera).

Currently 42% of the voters would prefer another grip button layout with only 23% being happy with the current D-BG6 layout. The rest of the voters don't care (about half of them because they don't use battery grips).

The motivation behind asking for a different button mapping is that in some shooting situations one uses both landscape and portrait orientations, switching back and forth dynamically and sometimes very quickly. For someone using the back-button AF approach, it is very disconcerting to not find the AF button in the same place, independently of the orientation. It would be ideal, if one could develop a muscle memory for operating the camera and directly transfer that to using the grip.

We appreciate that there is no space on the grip to put the AE-L button next to the AF button, however, because the AF button and the green button (in that order) are the most important buttons, their placement on the grip should have priority, i.e., they should be placed in the same (relative) positions as they are on the camera.

The D-BG4 for the K-5 mimics the button layout on the K-5 and it would have been wonderful if the D-BG6 could have done the same with respect to the K-1 as well. Given the current physical layout, would you please consider a firmware-supported remapping of the buttons?

Q: RAW Histogram/EVF

Dear Pentax/Ricoh,

Q: What is it about a True RAW Histogram that makes it so difficult for camera makers to implement?
Photographers have been begging camera companies about this for some time. what can Pentax do to remedy this? This would really stir up the photographic community.

Q: Can Pentax make a second version of the K1 DSLR with very high quaility EVF and keep the K mount/mirror as is? A lot of shooters would like the terrific choice :-) EVF can add many other functions that can't be done otherwise.

Thank you very kindly and sincerely.

Can they explain why they used a new system for the back screen on the K-1. It was assumed that when the 645z and KS-2 had articulated screens, the K-1 would use a similar screen. Why did Pentax engineers decide on a whole new engineered design, when they already had a existing design with the 645z and\or the KS-2?

Will future APS-C gain the higher 1/200 sec sync speed or will only FF bodies have the higher sync speed?

Any plans for an even longer zoom lens, perhaps an updated 250-600? Maybe even longer?

Some suggestions:

1. Will Ricoh expand its distribution to more countries, open their own shops or just license more distro's?

2. Will FF users also be offered the Pro support option? And what other lenses are coming up?

3. Is there a future for the Q line or a possible K-01 successor?

PENTAX Tethered Capture Plug-in for Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom®
645Z (FW version:1.21 or later) Windows/Mac v1.0.0
Software Downloads : Support & Service | RICOH IMAGING

It will probably work on the K-1. Their other tethering program (Image Transmitter 2) does (according the the K-1 specs).

It's a good question to ask Ricoh though - do they have a strategy for ensuring software interoperability between K-1 and 645Z (and K-3?). It would certainly be useful for pros and others.

Local distributor CRK Pty Ltd will no doubt be very keen to read any Ricoh response.

Are there 4 crop modes in firmware 1.00? If it's not, add 1:1, please, with new firmware.

It looks like the fourth setting is for quadratic crop, 1:1 aspect ratio.

future formats & flash

Hi Adam,

Now that Pentax has APSC, Full Frame and medium format. Will they continue to support all 3 formats
because other major makes like canon, Nikon sony and Fuji don't.

Also do they have plans to improve there flash system to be more competitive with canon & Nikon.

Can we get a clarification around the matte screen? Exchangeable or not? Any Pentax screens in the pipeline to exchange it with? Is the one in the camera on par with the Canon EE-s so many of us use in our K5's for better manual focusing with legacy fast lenses like the A* 85mm f1.4?

Since easier manual focusing is a decisive point for me, the answers to these questions might be my YES/NO answer to the question "will you buy the new K-1?"
