I'm not asking "much cheaper than competition". I'm hoping a street price like the Sigma price (eg $4999 for a f/4.5), but would still be happy with a Nikon price ($7999 for a f/4). I'd be able to afford a new one priced like the Sigma, and I would have to wait either a discount or a used occasion for a Nikon price. The fact is that I
will someday buy a 500 f/4 (or 4.5), and I'd really like to give this money to Pentax.
BTW, speaking about super telephoto lenses, a big difference with Nikon & Canon is the stabilization: at these focal lengths, having a stabilized lens is a real plus, and it must be really more complex to build. So IHMO it's normal to ask a little more for a given price (for instance a lighter lens, as they don't have to put the stab stuff), or a little bit cheaper for the same specs. They do it for most of their lenses, see the 150-450 for instance ($1650, when the Nikon 80-400 is $2300 & the Canon 100-400 is $2100 - B&H prices). So, a 3kg D-FA* 500mm f/4.5 at a MSRP of $6000-7000 and street price of $5000-6000 seems totally realistic to me (and would make me buy it).
