The M stands for "miniature." SMC-M = Super Multi-Coated - Miniature. This is from the 1970's, when a big Pentax design thrust was compact form following the somewhat larger K-series lenses. That DNA persists somewhat in the continued penchant Pentax has for smallness. All of the Limiteds except the zoom accept 49mm filters, for example. It is a trade-off with speed, of course, and many people still complain of few fast Pentax lenses. I think the heritage of compactness ends with K-1, however, and the new trinity of zooms.

You are not alone in that observation. Many people have been surprised to find that their vintage lenses perform quite nicely even the K-3.

??? There was no shortage of fast glass in the Pentax lineup until the DA series.

Pretty well much stopped at the DFA 150-450......

I sent an e-mail to the author of this article to clear the air on the sharpness. He was very responsive in the comments under the article on dpreview.

Well: FA*28-70 = 800gm DFA 24-70 = 787gm

Not really any direct comparison for the 150-450 but the 250-600 is 5400gm

I also agree with his opening remarks - some cameras just connect with you, and so it's always a pleasure to shoot with them. Others don't, even if technically they may have more features and be 'better'. Same with lenses. Yes I think some of us suggested he use an m 50 f/1.7 over the f/2 dud they were originally using and I'm glad to see he took the suggestion to heart. LOTS of fringing but otherwise nice photos I think.. I really like how the bg pulls away the subject on FF and the color doesn't seem too shabby.. even with those ancient lenses. Hard to tell about corners though since there weren't too many shots with detail in the corners.

It looks like the SR was set for 50mm not 24 in the 24mm shots

For the lack of sharpness... Do you notice that the guy says that for ricoh disposition he have to post photos only in VGA resolution?
It's impossible to visualize sharpness in a VGA (640*480) photo.

I was one of the first to visit the DPreview article and to notice that the motorbike shot was inadvertently posted unresized. So I have the fullsize sample on my HDD now

Based on that photo: the focus is off (it is somewhere behind the fuel tank cap) and the SMC Pentax-M 50mm f/1.7 shows tons of CA and PF (can be corrected in post I think although I never do that). But it definitely SEEMS sharp in the focal plane.

The doofuses must have had the 50mm lens on, set the SR for it, then put the 24mm on and just pressed OK when SR prompted them again for that 50mm length.

Where do they find these people?

Why are camera reviewers so bad, seemingly everywhere?

At least they were complementary! 😀

The razor thin plane of focus looks very sharp to me! Longitudinal CA like that is common for a lot of lenses wide open, my beloved DA70 shows it and I guess the FA limiteds (which I don't own) are quite known for it too?

How's it DPR's fault if people vote against the truth?

If I put a poll up here in PF asking what the solution to '2 + 2' was, and half the answers would be '3', would that reflect on PF or rather on certain users?
