I agree.
Nevertheless, i don't find it's AF speed to be "top notch" even amongst Pentax zooms, with K-3.
My HD DA16-85 focusses a bit faster, also with less "hunting" for example.
What's your opinion on that point ?

BTW : the title of this thread is erroneous, we speak about D-FA*70-200mm f/2.8, not about DA*70-200.... thanks in advance if the OP or a moderator can correct that.

Yes. On my K-3 without a grip its definitely out of balance. I have not had a chance to create a color profile for it with my x-rite color checker, but the OOC JPEGs are very good.

By the way did you have your firmware updated in regards to the AF performance. I think 1.20 or newer is required to drive the new DFA lenses properly.

I'm running 1.21 on my K-3. The lens doesn't hunt, but AF speed is not really fast. Its on par with my Sigma 85mm F/1.4. Not bad, but not real snappy. Very sharp at F/2.8 across the entire zoom range. Going to be a great zoom for wedding and events. On a 2 mile hike today and the weight didn't bother me as much as I expected. I expect it will be a little faster on the K-1.

Thanks, then we'll see if a moderator can help.

Yes, FW 1.21 on my K-3 as Winder, since i've been using D-FA150-450 for about a year now. I found the D-FA*70-200 lens AF slightly slower AF than DA16-85 even if it didn't hunt much with K-3.

Also, D-FA* AF was not constant with preproduction K-1 and FW 0.38 i tried : sometimes it focussed straight in one move or one move + one adjust, sometimes it needed up to 3 adjusts/hunts. Even in the favorable case, speed was slightly slower than that of DA16-85.
I'll have another try when production K-1 arrives.

It had better be. I have been saying for a while that Pentax lens AF motor speed was the reason for the poor AF-C performance, but this lens should be the very best of what Ricoh can offer and its not very quick at all on my K-3. Just shooting my dog bringing her ball back to me is getting awful results. My Sigma 85mm F/1.4 is getting a couple of keepers every retrieve, but the D-FA* 70-200mm is (at 85mm) is getting 1 or 2 in focus shots out of 50. The A7II with 90mm Macro is actually putting together an in focus sequence of 5-6 shots on each retrieve, and the A7II with a macro is not a fast AF setup.

I was under the impression that my lenses were the limitation on my K-3 AF, but that doesn't appear to be the case. The image quality of the D-FA* 70-200mm is awesome across the entire range (on APS-C), but the AF speed needs a kick in the butt.

Well, that's unfortunate if no distinctly better AF speed with K-1, but I am pleased to read that converging DFA*70-200 + K-3 experience from you Winder.

The 70-200 is made for the K-1 and its AF system. There will be a big difference. I have already tested that combo But yes, AF is a place Pentax still needs to get better..even though the new system is a BIG step up from the one on K-3II

What's holding Pentax back from producing a truly competitive AF system?

It's kind of critical, well for me at least.
