K-1 pre-production full res JPGs versus D810 ISO 12800, ISO 51200

Full Res ISO 12800 (no noise reduction) :
K-1 http://www.cyberphoto.se/bildexempel/k1/IMGP1017.JPG
D810 http://www.cyberphoto.se/bildexempel/d810/DSC_0145.JPG

A little scary ISO 51200 (watch for Details in the open Prismdome):

D810 http://www.cyberphoto.se/bildexempel/d810/DSC_0147.JPG

Whatever sick pixelpeepers might say, this should be good enough for anyone who can't afford a larger sensor pro camera like the Pentax 645z. Whiners fell free.

Mod edit: these pre-production photos (v0.38) that may not be representative of the image quality of the production K-1

Yep , as we can see from the full resolution photographs, you've made the right decision to stay with Ricoh.

K-1 is much better, but blurred. Nikon is sharp.

Looks good.

Weird though: The 810 has a lot of colour noise, while the K1 has none. And colour noise can be corrected quite easily. It's almost as someone ran colour noise reduction over only one of the two pictures.

Also, what's with the large horizontal lines (over the bottles, or the yellow area around the clock) in the 51k-iso-picture of the K1? It looks almost as if the scene was lit through window blinds.

Not trying to bash the K1, i'm confident it's gonna be an awesome camera.

No, the focus is just somewhere else in the picture, take another look.

It's probably because of the different perspectives (K-1 is a little closer and more straight on), but the K-1 shots appear to have shallower DOF, making it impossible to judge relative sharpness for the objects in the background.

The D810 shots show a lot more color noise than the K-1, which is surprising considering they're supposed to have a similar if not the same sensor. Some kind of hidden NR on the K-1?

I wouldn't be too worried about banding seen in a pre-production camera.

the full res shot outside of the shed, track and snow is awesome. DR and sharpness great across the whole frame. Very good.

Given the shutter speed, I suspect flickering

Compared to the D810, which seems to have been a sort of reference standard till now, the K-1 shows significantly lower chroma noise at high ISO. It looks like a new standard of performance in high ISO Full Frame photography is now possible.

Very good job done, Pentax - heartiest congratulations!

The detail in the deconstructed Minolta is very well resolved in the K-1 images. From the D810 it's total mush.
The angle, and angle of view are quite different so real comparisons are impossible though. Are they SOOC jpegs, or RAW files processed similarly? If the former, at least some of the differences could be due to the in-camera processing.

IIRC from the K-1 website, they did things to the stuff that hangs off the back of the sensor for better NR. It would appear that this has had pleasant results.

On another note, who else thinks there is something dreadfully grim and metaphorical about flagship-level Pentax and Nikon cameras going head to head by photographing a dead Minolta, especially with a Sony product also present in the frame...

Don't conclude too much from these pictures, in particular from their flaws.
