I don't think that it's too serious problem. There is tripod for such shooting.
You have really good eyes then. I've already used my DA300 with 2x TC, and for me it is really hard to use, only for static subject that allow a long time to frame and focus. 450 f5.6 x2 => 900 f11, that's a challenge. I look forward to see your images posted in the long lens club threat.

Again, I agree with RockvilleBob (just a little correction: $2 Billion divided by 4 is $500,000,000 )

The fun fact is that is seems that in France, albino elephants are not that rare!! O_o

Granted a minuscule number of the long lenses are Pentax long lenses. If the number is 250,000 then at $8,000 a lens that amounts to $2Billion. Lets say my guess is off by a factor of 4 then it would be $500,000 in telephoto lenses.
Ok, people don't buy a new 500mm lens every year, let's say 1 lens every 10 years. And Pentax has 5% market share. That would mean for Ricoh, 250000/4//10/20 = 312 lenses. For this number, Ricoh would be better of rebadging the Sigma 500 f4.5 .

The numbers are way off.
Congregation of wildlife photographers are a US phenomenon; apart from some national parks in Africa (where shorter lenses are more useful). Elsewhere long telephotos have to be carried for chance encounters with wildlife; smaller lenses are preferred. For wildlife super telephotos are used mainly by people working in blinds (with lots of patience); they are few.
Pentax have made 400 560mm lenses. They will probably use a decade or two to sell them all. Pentax may have 5% of the DSLR market, but nowhere near 5% of the super telephoto market.
If there was a big case for new Pentax super telephotos we would have seen them long ago.

Mmh I don't know in Norway, but in France on the forum I'm posting, most wildlife photographers doing decent pictures are using long telephoto lenses (500mm or so).

EDIT: seems like we have found the new endless debate, now that the FF is out

In countries where hunting is common, you definitely NEED LONG LENSES because game and birds become VERY SHY.

It is different in nordic european countries...

They are so shy you need a blind. No way you can get close enough to wildlife around here that a 600mmm is of much use (except for moose but then you won't have that 600mm lens with you).

-1 for a 400 f/5.6, it would overlap with the 150-450. Would be lighter though, but another focal length / aperture couple is more important IMHO.

I was thinking about a "prime" lens rather than a zoom.
Just a thought for those like me who can't afford a 500mm lens but still do not want a zoom lens.
Would be nice to have a compact 400mm quality prime telephoto lens ... for me anyway !

I'd like one, but it'd still be out of my budget for a few years now...
