The store does have a sense of humour until they ring up my purchases and want me to pay for them.

Recently though the 'Mericans" have been a lot better. A couple of years ago I had a European ask me if I knew her cousin who lives in Vancouver.

I asked Downtown Camera if they were going to have one of these, and they never got back to me, you suppose their is any point in sending a registered letter?

Well, back in "old europe" they've already done this. In the center of former west Berlin, local photography store "Foto-Meyer" held an introductory workshop on the K-1 with four sample cameras present (loaded with the 0.48 firmware). That was already on March, 18th.

The workshop was lead by Ricoh regional sales manager Martin Dehn, who did quite a good job not being swept away by the deluge of drool the room filled with eager pentaxians produced (myself included).

Everyone present was abled to handle a K-1 and to take some (albeit quite uninteresting) shots with it; several of the present pentaxians had their full Pentax lens range with them and were allowed to check the K-1's compatibility. The demo cameras came equipped with Pentax' new 28-105 and the 24-70 lens, and some had the battery grip mounted.

I had the chance to take a peek through the viewfinder whilst a Sigma 17-50 was attached. That's an APS-C-Lens, thus heavy vignetting in non-crop mode was to be expected and - yes, quite present. A pity is the 0.7x viewfinder "magnification", but this might be amended using the O-ME53.

Someone had a Nikon D800 on him, so it was possible to compare the shutter noise and size of the cameras. Yes. Weren't I pretty certain, that Nikon was not a russian camera brand, that comparison would have lead me to think so - the shutter noise of the D800 is comparable to a Kiev-88 (to be politically correct, that's a ukrainian brand), and the size and weight ... Lets spread the mantle of forgetfulness on this, shall we?


Did I already mention that the room was steeped in drool by eager pentaxians? The words "shut up and take my money" I head for several times that evening, and the photo store took several pre-orders ... which are hopefully delivered soon. Rumours said April 4th, the Ricoh sales manager said April 15th ... and on ricoh.co.jp are the ominous words "Go on sale in the end of April"
