Had a chat with BH. Even though I placed my order March 9th, he said my K1 would go out 1st week of May. So for me... it sort of sooner than expected...

I ordered k-1 in mid February, when announced (also ordered the 15-30 and the battery grip). B&H notified me the camera would be in stock by or before early May, the 15-30 should be in stock by May 2, and no date yet on the battery grip.

I've had the grip for a week but why would anyone want to watch me unbox it? Especially because it just went back into the box and onto a shelf to wait for the K-1 to arrive. I do not understand unboxing videos.

This, so much.

It's not so much of a problem when the person then goes on to show how to get the thing fired up, set some basic menu options and be ready to shoot in any or all of P, Tv, Av, M, TAv with JPEG and/or RAW. That at least serves some sort of purpose.

It appeals to a certain audience, I guess.

This guy started doing unboxing videos in 2009 or so and has built it into a YouTube channel with 2.5 million subscribers.

From humble beginnings...

Impressive productivity. His team seem to do about 1 video a day, or more.

Sure but unboxing underwear (yes I'm slightly cynical) can be done at a stupidly high pace and posted one per day for weeks of one wants.

Either way, with high profile products (iphones or such) I'm not surprised. But, a grip? Rotflmao that just filling void (well trying to 'cos this still void to me).

They used to rent a house and shoot the product video reviews in the kitchen. Then they moved to an industrial space where they built out multiple sets for the different shows. And they really make viewers feel like they are part of the story:

Really eye-opening and inspiring for a YouTube channel. Their videos will get 100,000 - 500,000 views regularly, with many topping 1,000,000. When you think about it, there's no way a show like this could succeed on cable TV - just not a big enough audience. But Linus has smaller overhead and can support the programming with sponsorship.

This is the future of television.

Hmmm... I see it as a parallel development for the time being. The big networks/studios and their resources can do things the small operators simply cannot match. But eventually we'll get to the point where small independent operators can do well enough - not the best, but enough to make more people turn off their TV and hop onto YouTube.

YT is currently a goldmine for those seeking information and discourse in preference to pure entertainment, but in the long run I suspect you will be proven correct. The only downside is that the worst parts of it are the sort of abyss that actively stares back at you.
