It looks like they got both. Exif data shows the image was created with the K-1 at ISO 3200.

Well, if Olympus can sell you a pen, so can Pentax. The difference is, Pentax' pen really is a pen, and not a camera called Pen.

Really eye-opening and inspiring for a YouTube channel. Their videos will get 100,000 - 500,000 views regularly, with many topping 1,000,000. When you think about it, there's no way a show like this could succeed on cable TV - just not a big enough audience. But Linus has smaller overhead and can support the programming with sponsorship.

This is the future of television.
I see this claim a lot, but then I read articles citing how most of those channels aren't making any money at all, and I'm fairly confident I know what the problem is. Views is a meaningless statistic without demographics, and while I know the plural of anecdote isn't "statistics" I've personally concluded that phones as electronic baby sitters explains why millions of views still don't mean anything. When the average person clicking view over and over again is 10 or less and just entertained by the noises and droning of the voices, it's hard to call that "television". Even the demographics they release don't mean anything, because every kid that watches gets counted as one of their parents, since officially they aren't allowed to be watching it at all. Youtube itself hasn't figured out how to monetize it and barely can break even. It's babysitting more than TV.

For some like Linus, YouTube has become a way to make a living. For someone like Sage Canaday (professional ultra marathoner), it part of a suite of social tools that he uses along with Instagram, Twitter, Patreon, and others to build his brand, sell some books and videos, and attract sponsors. For others like the Tire Rack, which produces its own YouTube channel with highly produced car reviews, it's marketing. The Tire Rack doesn't expect to make money on YouTube, but they know that if they want to reach gearheads younger than 30 they are not going to be able to do it just with ads in Car and Driver.

Is there also crap and drivel on YouTube? Certainly. In that regard it's not different than the boobtube. But there's also great stuff on there that you just won't find on television. And you can watch when you want to, not when some programming director thinks you should.

Anyway, back to the K1....

Well a few things ...

If young people were not a great target, I fail to see why we had dedicated TV channels for kids for years. Why companies like Disney even bother and why there so many ads between 2 cartoons at the TV ? Also if you think that kids will get your K1 grip video go viral, you may have a problem with your target audience.

Nobody force the people here to do what they do, honestly. Surely some do that out of boredom or just hoping. fail to see how it would be worse to do a Youtube video than say play a video game or go to the cinema, as boredom is concerned.

From what I checked fast, 1000 view is worth like 1-4$ so if you can make 1 video per day and get on average 200K views, that still 300-700$ per day. 60K-140K$ a year. That not that bad, and still let you with 10 weeks of vacations.

Imagine if just all the guy spending one day shooting picture here for fun could get that much money? Hey for each day spent playing with your camera get randomly 300-700$! Many would soon stop their day job!

Absolutely a different beast between being able to theoretically bring home a living for a single person rather than being the "future of television". It's more "public access TV" with the absolute best getting close to late night cable numbers occasionally. No one said you can't market that way. It's definitely not the future of television because the budgets don't work for anything other than short infotainment pseudo news.

YouTube Is Now Bigger Than Individual Cable Networks

"Following the results of a strong second quarter, Google’s stock jumped 16.3% — which added $65 billion in market value on Friday. During the earnings call, Google’s chief business officer Omid Kordestani said that YouTube is now bigger than any individual U.S. cable network for the key demographic of 18-49 year olds."

Forbes Welcome

Personally, I can't think of a single person under 20 that watches traditional television.

From your link: The average time that YouTube users are watching videos on mobile devices is 40 minutes

What an amazing success. We've managed to get twice as many kids to watch almost a whole hour of TV. This supports my point: measuring individuals by individual head count does not measure success of a product. YouTube is still losing money and still trying to understand why having a lot of people consume your product without giving you money back is a bad thing. Unlike cable, YouTube costs YouTube for every single bit they send.

When you count the age of youtube and the market prenetration of TV vs good enough internet computer/smartphone, you may see that this is extremely impressive. TV didn't manage what it is overnight and youtube got already in 2013 5 billions $ revenues from ads. Not too bad. More than most paid TV channels in the world.

As for paid TV, in US this might be a bit different because people are quite wealthy but worlwide most people don't pay freely for TV channels. Expensive cable operator like in US target the few wealthy.

If anything else most media dont make much money but one of their objective is to influence their readers/listeners/viewers. Who control the media control what people see/read/listen too and so control (sure partially) their way of thinking, they opinion and behavior. That why you see billionnaires and big group willing to buy new papers that are a loss and other things like that.

Recently remember we got the hint that facebook was not that neutral on its trending topics and may subtlely influence the US elections. That's just the tip of the iceberg and we all know that each TV channel, newpaper tend to have an editorial line...

Google is everywhere, in your phone, in youtube, all the time you use search something or even use surf on the Internet. They are starting to put it in TVs too and hope to be next in your car. They control what you can find, the ads they display to you, they warn you when they are traffic jam on your way to work or remember you'll have a flight to take tomorrow. They store all your geographicalhistorical position (thanks to the phone) they know if you watch porn what you like or not, your age, sex and race. They know you contact list, who you call, text or not and they have access to most of the pictures you take. They are Big Brother.

Just to say this is US. In many country most people don't pay willingly for TV... Most of the people I know in France don't pay for it for example and we are not alone. US is just a country, not the world.
