What an amazing success. We've managed to get twice as many kids to watch almost a whole hour of TV. This supports my point: measuring individuals by individual head count does not measure success of a product. YouTube is still losing money and still trying to understand why having a lot of people consume your product without giving you money back is a bad thing. Unlike cable, YouTube costs YouTube for every single bit they send.
When you count the age of youtube and the market prenetration of TV vs good enough internet computer/smartphone, you may see that this is extremely impressive. TV didn't manage what it is overnight and youtube got already in 2013 5 billions $ revenues from ads. Not too bad. More than most paid TV channels in the world.
As for paid TV, in US this might be a bit different because people are quite wealthy but worlwide most people don't pay freely for TV channels. Expensive cable operator like in US target the few wealthy.
If anything else most media dont make much money but one of their objective is to influence their readers/listeners/viewers. Who control the media control what people see/read/listen too and so control (sure partially) their way of thinking, they opinion and behavior. That why you see billionnaires and big group willing to buy new papers that are a loss and other things like that.
Recently remember we got the hint that facebook was not that neutral on its trending topics and may subtlely influence the US elections. That's just the tip of the iceberg and we all know that each TV channel, newpaper tend to have an editorial line...
Google is everywhere, in your phone, in youtube, all the time you use search something or even use surf on the Internet. They are starting to put it in TVs too and hope to be next in your car. They control what you can find, the ads they display to you, they warn you when they are traffic jam on your way to work or remember you'll have a flight to take tomorrow. They store all your geographicalhistorical position (thanks to the phone) they know if you watch porn what you like or not, your age, sex and race. They know you contact list, who you call, text or not and they have access to most of the pictures you take. They are Big Brother.
