TIPA seems to always try to give an award to everyone.

Did TIPA tried the camera before they gave their rating? Which other cameras did it compete against?

Since they started creating one category per product, they ceased saying which were the competitors
By the way, I notice the Canon 5Ds/5Ds R, which were announced last year, in February.

That's what came into my mind. Have they used the camera before making/giving the award? I'm not trying to spoil the fun or to say that the k-1 isn't a capable camera but, it would be nice to receive an award based on performance and not on something that you've read. I mean, this is a new camera and we've barely had any reviews and tests done using the production system.

Maybe they'll give it the Nobel Peace Prize next?

Yeah, I'd rather know that it had been judged against fierce competition than just handed a door prize. I mean, good for Pentax and we all want the best for the K-1, but let's be sure the award actually means something. If they didn't use it themselves, at least let them have considered reports from people like Kenspo, who've taken it out and shot the blazes out of it.

Flattering, but a mockery when it's a product still not released in its final configuration.

You can argue both ways. I see your point, but there's also the possibility that the pre-production model was simply that good, and worthy of the award.

No one has a clue how they made their decision. Maybe the pre-production model was good enough to be the DSLR of the year, without the final release of the software.

We have some real negative thinkers here. Here you have a camera that with it's pixel short improbably capable of competing in IQ with any DSLR on the planet including the 51MP Canon, as in pixel shift mode it's sample size is 144 MP, for $1000 less than it's closest competitor, and some of us can't imagine why it might win an award for that.

I gotta say, the negativity says more about the posters, thank it does about the awards.

I swear some people have short circuits in their brains that prevent them from having a positive thought, ever.

All of this type of awards are in some ways bogus, but that doesn't mean it means absolutely nothing when you get one. It means you're worthy of recognition. and for shoppers, definitely worth taking a look at. At this point the K-1 meets the criteria, final production unit or not.

According to the linked-to article, "awards are only given to products that have been reviewed by the collective" of TIPA magazines, so one may presume they reviewed cameras made available to them before general market availability.

All full frame DSLRs that came out in 2015/16 got an award. They probably invented the high res FF category especially for Canon
