I'm sorry if I didn't understand it properly but what can Pentax gain by partnering with Fuji?
The shutter time wheel (already on film cameras)? x-trans (no-thanks)?

IMHO it's Fuji who has a lot to gain and not so much to give (except maybe cash)...
I don't think there will be a partnership, but if there were, maybe APS-C lens designs? Fuji is doing pretty well on that front, and it would allow Ricoh to focus on expanding the FF range while still putting out good APS-C glass.

Fuji's APS-C short registration distance lens designs don't work on the K-mount...

Humor me for a few moments, and allow me to describe my ultimate dream camera. . . Start with a Fuji X-T1: look-and-feel, controls, weather sealing, tilt screen, huge EVF, everything. Then scale it up a little, just enough to make it full-frame. (This would be with a new lens mount, of course.) Then make available a fully-featured K-mount lens adapter that supports everything, including a built-in motor for screw-drive AF, aperture control lever, lens profiles, etc.

THAT would be it, from my viewpoint.

(Or they could just make it native K-mount, and I would be OK with that. But a lot of people would cry, "K-01! It's another K-01! It's too biiiiiiig!!!! Mirrorless cameras are supposed to be small!" and all the reviewers would pan it.)

So Pentax' role would be to ease the migration towards Fujifilm?

What holds Ricoh Imaging back from a robust MILC that preserves the Pentax legacy isn't so much the design engineering, I don't think, as the manufacturing process engineering and greenfield capital investment. I should think Ricoh could lend / consult on manufacturing process, and supply capital, but maybe they're busy working on higher margin product areas.

If partnering in some form with another company offers Ricoh Imaging a higher Return on Invested Capital they would be insane not to at least consider it.

agree -- it is pretty clear to me that Fuji is going after the same market as Pentax: WR, small, lightweight, high-quality. The fact that it is mirrorless is besides the point.

Most small primes of Pentax don't have the WR.

Yes, and none of those are small. None of Pentax' small and relatively small primes, including the FA and DA Limiteds, are weather sealed.
