Can only be a good thing

That Sigma 200 f/2 patent link could mean healthy competition too if made available in K mount.

The DA*200mm f2.8 is based upon the FA*200 f2.8, a full frame lens: SMC Pentax-FA* 200mm F2.8 ED [IF] Reviews - FA Prime Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database. It would be interesting to see the innovative feature of the patent, compared to the FA*/DA*200 f2.8.

But ... but ... we already have a 200 f/2.8. Sure, there's always room for improvement, but maybe make a 300 f/2.8, or a 400 f/4 or whatever else first?

I recently bought the current SMC version of the DA*200 because I knew I wouldn't want to spring for the new one, which I expect to be a redesigned case with a ring motor like all current Pentax designs. After seeing the 150-450 and 70-200 come in at Canikonian prices, you might want to look up what their prices are for 300 2.8 and 400 2.8 glass. Odds are, most can't afford it, and certainly, no one wants to carry it. I'm no sure those are the lenses you can build market share with.

There is a FA* 200 f/2.8, but it hasn't been in production for 12 years. I don't think the DA* 200 f/2.8 is FF compatible...is it?

Thinking about the apparent sales volume of the DA560 (one of our members who seems to be informed about such things says at current sales rate it will take a decade to clear the inventory) I wonder if Pentax will even attempt a 400 or 600.

Yes. It most certainly is, even in official communication from Ricoh.

It is, that's why I'm surprised that they are working on another one. If they are, of course.

And then when it's announced as "discontinued" 10 years from now , people will squeal like stuck pigs, and claim Pentax is letting them down.

It will be an upgrade from SDM to a ring motor. The FF will be capable of taking advantage of faster focussing lenses and 200mm is a critical area to cover. Far more critical than 300 or 400 ƒ2.8. Nothing surprising about it at all. I was recommending it as were others. The biggest drawback to the lens I own, the DA*200 is the focussing speed, but the price was right.

The A* 200 was released in 1984 [added]
The FA* 200/2.8 was released in 1993.
The DA* 200/2.8 was released in 2008, and is (old) SDM and Screwdrive.

Redesigning a *200 with a fast DC ring drive seems to me a higher priority than another extreme telephoto, given existence of the DA560 and 150~450.

Additionally, consider the possibility the existing stock is nearing depletion, so now's the time to redesign.

I suspect your last point is the hits the nail on the head.

The 200 probably has never sold that well (compared to the 60-250,50-135 and 300) and probably only ever had a single production run.

Given the release of a FF body there is a reasonable expectation of increased sales of this prime length.

Also bear in mind a lens patent often take 5-10 years to see a product if ever.
