Pentax - the first camera manufacturer to have three different mounts (Q, K, 645) for digital system cameras, and five different sensor sizes (1/2,3" 1/1,7" APS-C, FF and 44x33mm). Maybe they will extend the selection to become the first with 6 sensor sizes (add 53,7x40,4mm FF645) and the first with 7 sensor sizes and 4 mounts (a new 1" system). I don’t know if its spreading their effort to wide or just an impressive lineup.

Look*, particularly at the Portrait and Landscape scores. It's closer than you may think.

* Yeah it's an MX-1 but I believe that it has a same generation sensor as the Q7/Q-S1

Fair enough on the DR - I am actually really surprised at the ISO performance too, that is pretty much the same as the G16, which if memory serves was the best in that class for a while. The colour depth is a bit off, but not too dissimilar, also.

I'm not sure that test scores adequately capture it. I borrowed a Q for a while, and had a V1 (10mp Aptina sensor, not the Sony one now in their cameras), and neither of them seem to hold a candle to what the GM1 can do - it is more DSLR, and in terms of sharpness and overall image quality with say the Oly 45mm is simply stellar. In daylight, on par with what I am getting with Fuji and Pentax (and did get with Sony NEX for that matter).

Back on topic, I'd say there is definitely a place for the 1" sensor. I'd expressed this a while ago that I hoped that Ricoh would resurrect the Caplio line with one in, but it looks like Panny beat them to that. For fair weather shooting either 1/1.7 or 1 inch is enough. I'll suggest another compromise - 1/1.2"!

Completely OT: How can it be that that photo hasn't become a meme!? Maybe it's the first time you've published it? It reeks of memetic potential...

Absolutely right. Great for this, especially when you need more reach:

Barely. The Nikon 1 registration distance (17mm) is almost twice that of the Q (9.2mm).
Well, if you have to develop new lenses anyway, you might as well increase the registration distance if 9.2mm poses a problem. It's not like you can use the current Q lenses with the new sensor.

They could then provide an extension tube of sorts to be able to use the new lenses on the current bodies.

.
Of course you can. Crop, just like DA lens on K-1.

Ok, but if 9.2mm poses a problem, you would have to use extension tubes to fit the new 1" compatible lenses on a camera that is more or less made for these lenses. Not a good long-term solution I think.

---------- Post added 05-26-2016 at 09:40 AM ----------

Or Pentax could make the lenses deliberately 7.8mm longer to have kind of a built-in extension tube, which isn't ideal either.

---------- Post added 05-26-2016 at 09:59 AM ----------

Also, I seem to remember that the mount diameter limits the maximum aperture of the lenses. That's why Canon can make an 85/1.2 while Nikon can "only" make an 85/1.4 for their respective mounts. So I wonder if Pentax would be able to develop e.g. an 18mm f/1.9 lens for this upgraded Q, to be similar to the 8.5mm f/1.9 lens we have now? And, actually, would a fastest speed of f/1.9 sell, given that the camera would probably be more expensive in the first place as it has a bigger sensor?

One thing's for sure: nothing is.
