Going back to when I had a Sigma 100-300/4 ... that was big enough.
Sigma alreafy has such a beast: a 120-300 2.8 for canon and nikon mounts.

I dont think weight is an issue for most professional sports shooters. And price wouldnt be a hige deal for many of them.

Price isn't a big deal to them because Canon and Nikon lend big glass to them free of charge.

I don't think anyone can say for sure. It might depend on their design priorities. On the DFA*70-200 and DFA 150-450 they seem to have lowered the priority for small and light. If they do the same on a 100-300 f/4 it could be quite large.

I am waiting for a 2.8/300 plus 2x TC. After a 85, 35, 24 and a pentax design 24-70.
4/100-300 is just in between everything somehow. Get a 70-200/2.8 on APS-C for quite similar reach.

Reminder: this patent is for the D FA* 70-200 f/2.8 (just like the "35-80 f/4" patent was for the D FA 28-105). It's the 5th embodiment from the egami article (19 elements in 16 groups, 2 ED elements, 2 super ED elements - anomalous dispersion glass is not mentioned).
I wouldn't expect any Pentax 100-300 f/4, not so soon after the D FA 150-450, anyway. There are other niches to fill.

In another thread (this one) I speculated something similar:

f4: 35-80mm, 80-300mm (speculation)
f2.8: 15-30mm, 24-70mm, 70-200mm
variable: 28-105mm F3.5-5.6 , 150-450mm F4.5-5.6
The only thing that is surprising me with the constant f4 zoom patents is that they are really big lenses, with lots of elements. Would expect them to be the "affordable" or "compact" lineup, but I guess Ricoh has its plans.
That said, a patent is not yet a product. Any number of reasons why to file a patent. Will only take it seriously when Ricoh officially announces it

Well-healed enthusiasts. The 1% thinks nothing of dropping that kind of money on a hobby.

and for non-sponsored professionals, canon has a program that lets you borrow lenses(once) for free and free cleaning, etc... pretty good deal for $100/yr. Personalized Support for the Imaging Professional

If this is badged as a 100-300 f/4 instead of the 102.00-293.70 f/4.1 that the patent listing says it is, I'm going to make a lot of noise about false advertising.

It is marketed as the D FA 70-200 F2.8 But according to the patent it is a 72.09-194 F2.9
