Apparently you're not very familiar with what the K-30 and K-50 were. They contained almost all the performance and features of the flagship APS-C camera, but in a less-expensive, less-rugged body without some of the niceties such as a second dial and top LCD. And the body was also smaller and lighter than the flagship camera.

So when somebody hopes that the K-70 will provide most of the performance/features of the K-3 II but in smaller/lighter/less expensive body, then they're really just hoping that it continues in the tradition of the K-30 and K-50. So I'm not sure why you think that's so funny.
I owned a K-30. it was in no way, shape, or form a K-5 II. The K-30 was lacking 14-bit RAW, the faster burst, deeper buffer, lcd top panel, mag alloy body, battery grip support, air gapless rear panel, and quieter, faster shutter to name a few things.

Yep that's where I see the differentiation between the 'pro' and 'consumer' lines in APS-C land.

I wonder if we'll see a similar split over time in the 645 and FF sensor lands also?

The question remains I guess, as to how you progress the K-70 and K-S3 consumer models, without encroaching on the pro model range of the K-3ii and K-4 eventually. (Hope they do a K-3 mk iii )

I will be (pleasantly) surprised if a K-70 has PixelShift as I consider that a flagship feature.

I don't see the fully articulated screen (ala K-1) as anything but a flagship feature either.

Perhaps a flippy screen ala K-S2 without the selfie button or an articulated screen ala 645Z.
I think the sensor of the K-1 makes it the flagship.

K-70 should be the light Weight high performance camera in 12-bit raw.

I've got a K-3, K-5 and K-30 - and K-30 is often my walkabout body because it is noticeable smaller and lighter than the other two, and it takes AA's which it occasionally handy when I'm somewhere where I might not be able to charge the standard battery (or I leave the charger behind - which I did when we went to Thailand ). The only things I miss from time to time are the larger buffers and higher frame rates of the other two bodies, and occasionally the top screen because that allows me to check the basic exposure settings without delving into the rear screen menus before I start shooting.

I've got biggish hands and the K-S2 body is too small for me, and I never felt the need to "upgrade" to it, but the tilting screen looks to handy at times (I rarely if ever use live view because of poor eyesight "accommodation" issues due to my age, and reflections issues - but I appreciate that 90% of camera/camera-phone users now do!).

Therefore I would hope that the K-70, or whatever it may be called, is not (much?) smaller than the K-30/K-50, and has some of those "missing features" (although I don't hold out any hope for a top screen). FWIW, I was looking to buy something the size of the K-S2, I'd be looking more in the micro four-thirds direction, but I'm not so happy with 4:3 aspect ratio as the 3:2 of the Pentaxes,

Yeah, I didn't say the K-30 was a K-5 II and that the cameras were identical. The K-30 also cost a lot less. You basically just repeated my post, in more detail.

Exactly.

A fully-articulated screen comes in handy, just like having a built-in flash does. I've appreciated having it when I use a tripod, or the camera is at an awkward angle where composing with the viewfinder is impossible. But a fully-articulated should be implemented from now on because it offers more positioning for such things than just the tilting. I typically use the viewfinder....

Did they get rid of the K-30's glossy "Crystal" finish with the K-50? I saw a white K-50 on display at Target a while back, and it had a dull finish that I didn't like at all. If so, then I hope they bring back the glossy finishes for the K-70.

I wish Pentax would be more consistent with their naming, but that has not been the case. Entry level: K100d, K200d, Km, Kx, Kr, K500, KS1.

I wonder if the K70 could be the K3ii replacement. Now that full frame is using single digits, they could be going back to double digits for semi-pro APS-C ala K10d and K20d. That leaves KS_ for entry level and mid range as it is currently with KS1 and KS2.

Ultimately, Pentax has given us ample opportunity to question their naming convention.

I gave up on guessing when it comes to Pentax naming. Before anybody calls me out because I just guessed the k70 would be the K3ii replacement, let me make it clear, that was simply speculation of one possibility, and not my guess of what I expect to happen. Here is what I expect to happen: The K70 will either be an entry level, mid-range, or pro-level, APS-C dslr. Unless it is full-frame. Or mirrorless
