I had this same dilemma back in may. I asked my self these two questions

1) What would I want to see updated on the current sigma 85mm? My answer was, not much. The 85 mm is already a very good lens. Maybe WR but sigma doesn't do that. Sigma traditionally removes the OS feature from k-mount varients.

2) If/When sigma comes out with an "Art" version of the 85mm, will they offer it in the K-mount? Given Sigma's recent rhetoric...it's very possisble they won't.

With that in mind, I decided to buy the current one.
true not much. I think I maybe picked up a FA* 85 too easily and afraid to damage it. plus the sigma seems super sharp which really like since I don't deliver any photos which haven't been edited by my editors anyway. think I might have to just pick up the sigma next week too

new tamron SP lenses? right now my favourite lens is the old tamron 70-200, damn it's so sharp, and used to love theyre old adaptall lenses.

Since they are already making the D-FA 15-30mm F/2.8 and the D-FA 24-70 F/2.8 it only seem logical. With Ricoh moving to the new KAF4 mount and eliminating the mechanical linkage for aperture control, it makes it much more economical for 3rd parties to manufacture glass for K-mount. We will probably see a Sigma ART 50mm F/1.4 by the end of they year and the current 35mm ART will be changed to the KAF4 mount.

Tamron can make very good glass. The Sony/Zeiss 55mm F/1.8 is a Tamron design. Sony is the largest share holder in Tamron and Tamron designs a good bit of glass for the for Sony and the Sony/Zeiss line. The Zeiss 55mm F/1.8 is a very special lens and the main reason I still shoot with my Sony A7II.

What if... at this Photokina's PF Sigma interview, when asked about Pentax, they will say "we have no plans to expand the K-mount lens line, because it's difficult to reverse engineer the KAF4 electronic aperture control protocol"?

This argument was a bad reason, spoken to avoid the good one : not enough sales potential in K mount.
And i'm affraid that K-1's even rather clear success doesn't change that situation.

Tamron's 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD SP AF is a lens I would love to see come to K-mount. It's a very good performer that doesn't break the bank, and is also FF compatible. Kind of a bridge lens between budget 300mm zooms and high-end high-speed zooms.

Hogwash. The current used price of FA*85 1.4 is a clear indication of the need for an AF 85 1.4 with excellent optical quality. Given that Pentax doesn't yet offer it is a clear opportunity for Sigma.

It is not 'hogwash.' Sigma is a business about profit. There appears to be more profit in continuing to produce their lenses in F and EF/EF-S than retooling to include K. They've even stated as such.. there currently isn't enough demand to warrant their effort to support K mount any more than they currently are.

Hopefully they'll reconsider sooner than later.. but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Just because there is a hole in the lineup doesn't mean Sigma will make more profits filling it than continuing as they are with other highly desired mounts.

Otherwise they could lauch F/4 zooms, 150-600mm Sport and/or Contemporary, and several of the Art series primes since Pentax doesn't have any similar lenses in their lineup.

That said, since they already had a K mount 85/1.4 I could see it coming back as an Art.. but, again, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Well, if that's the argument, why would anyone even offer a 85 1.4, including Pentax? I don't think by adding Pentax K is an opportunity lost by adding it to the supported mounts especially since the launch of the K-1. It's in everyone best interest to offer the 85 1.4, and if sigma doesn't do it first with the art version of this lens they would have missed an opportunity. I'd be surprised if they aren't fully aware of this and ready to announce the 85 1.4 art in Pentax K.

That isn't my argument, not specifically with the 85 1.4 that you so desperately want but in general, that is Sigma corporate's.

This was Sigma's stance prior to the K-1. Has there been any response from Sigma after the release of the K-1? I guess we'll see in September at Photokina if the 85 1.4 Art will be released in K mount. Hopefully, someone releases an 85 1.4 or even a 1.2 very soon. I'd love to see Pentax, but who knows if and when. I'd really like to see Pentax offer a fully compatible modern portrait prime, hopefully very very soon.

I thought the main Sony lines were Tamrons and the 'Zeiss' ones were made by Cosina.

No, the Zeiss-labelled Sony lenses aren't designed nor manufactured by Cosina.

Tamron make the Sony and Sony-Zeiss lenses.
Cosina makes the Loxia and Batis
Zeiss makes the Otis, Milvus and Cine glass.

The Sony/Zeiss FE 55mm is part of the same design program that produced the 35mm, 45mm, & 85mm F/1.8 Tamron SP lenses.
