Sigma 85mm F1.4 discontinued

https://translate.google.com/translate?ie=UTF8&prev=_t&tl=en&u=http://digica...v8ocm47TxqUkPw

There goes the only AF 85mm F1.4 for the K-1 Hopefully Sigma will bring out the coming ART version in K-mount.

I own this lens and dearly love it. Nothing else I own even comes close on my K-5 IIs so I'm going to hang on to it. It definitely is quite heavy and bulky and its nickname in my house is "the Beast".

I know the 77 LTD is slightly slower at 1.8 max f-stop, but is the Sigma worth paying extra over the 77 LTD?

Truth is, f/1.4 is pretty useless on modern full frame digital. The DoF is so, soooo thin and modern sensors so much better at high ISO performance and noise reduction software advanced, that ultra fast lenses are fairly pointless. They're large, heavy and expensive and in all but a few examples they're quite soft wide open (ironically Sigma Art is generally the exception for wide open sharpness).

I have a K 1.2/50 and the Planar 1.4/85 and I never shoot them wide open anyway, nearly always stopped down to at least f/2. I find slightly slower, much smaller, lighter lenses like the 1.8/77 Ltd to be ideal (although stopped down the Planar is stunning).

I'd sooner the manufacturers produced slightly slower (f/1.8 - f/2) genuine apochromatic lenses.

Demand for the 85mm Sigma in K-mount will probably go up until Ricoh releases their own 85mm. It is a very good lens with fast AF.

I'm hoping Tamron releases the 85mm F/1.8 in K-mount with the 35mm and the 45mm.

Really depends on what you need. I love the 77mm LTD size, but the 85mm Sigma is better IMO.

Likewise mine on my K-5IIs ... and hopefully on a K-1 within the next 6 months.

However I don't tend to give my lenses nicknames as that would be a bit strange .... wouldn't it?

Not really...names for squirrels might be though!

I'd love to have the SIgma, but as little as I would use it I think I am going for that Samyang. It is very decent and the price is very reasonable. I would likely only use it for portraits, where AF is not critical.

Regards

What does "huh?" mean. I already explained my reasoning and to selectively quote my post is downright rude along with your terse response.

Clint just realized the downside to owning a K-1.

You'll have just as much in focus as on aps-c. Just a lot more out of focus.

Now that it is discontinued, this also means authorized repair will have limited parts.. so if yours needs some TLC, I'd probably consider taking care of that now than later..

I sent my Sigma 105mm in for cleaning to CRIS.. they claimed it needed a new front element (huh?) but wouldn't even touch it because it was a discontinued version and thus parts were not readily available.. they just sent it back untouched.
