For sensor of 645Z - yes, for crop 1.0 MF sensor - 21-48. But it's not MF zoom.

seems to me they would likely be positioning this lens as a "three primes" replacement: 35mm, 50mm, and 80mm
In fact, I would be happy if it weren't a "zoom" at all but instead had three fixed, optimized positions only which you would click through rather than zoom through.

What is the use of three extremely slow primes in a big hugely expensive lens (because of many elements and complex formula?). Most already have a 35 and a 50 anyway.

This is a kit lens for next entry level FF body.
Something like a digital equivalent of K-1000.

Pentax has already delivered something similar for crop sensor: the DA* 20-40mm.
I don't see why they wouldn't continue the trend since it clearly has been successful and differentiates the brand.
FWIW: we still have no idea of cost, weight, size, or IQ -- so anything other than zoom range and constant aperture is purely speculation at this point.

DA 20-40mm ltd F2.8-4 (not constant) which is only 68.5mm long. This one at least 114.9mm at it's shortest. (And 18 elements, not 9 like the DA). It's a totally different beasty.

As I shoot primarily landscapes and do not prefer swapping primes in the field, I would love a couple compact F4 zooms. Just finished a weekend rental with the new DFA 24-70 and there is no way I am lugging that thing on long hikes. A compact F4 equivalent on the other hand, sign me up!! Plus, landscapes often have less need for fast lenses...

Amen. At least one person on this list "gets it".
Basically if someone wants big, get yourself a CaNikon.

Why do you still discuss like it is a small lens? Haven't we already figured out that it will be quite large? (larger then D-FA 28-105)

Um no, we have not figured out anything. This is a patent application. The dimensions shown may or may not be pertinent to the patent. And the dimensions shown may or may not apply to any future lens by this manufacturer.

The patent describes a length of 160mm at the shortest, from sensor to the front element. If the patent don't describe the patent, what does it describe then? Its the patent that are the subject of this thread, not something totally unrelated.

Perhaps it is a cost-no-object optically perfected with no compromises zoom lens? The D-FA* 35-80/4.
Still, they lack a 24mm lens to complement it.

It seems a weird focal length range for the 21st century...

The only thing that makes sense to me is as a kit lens on the slightly down market second full-frame body.

I still think a f4 compact lens is a great idea, but I keep ending up at 24-50. There's an old one as precedence, it wouldn't be as capable as the 24-70 f2.8, and it would match up well with a full-frame 55-300...

With as many 35-70F lenses out there for good prices, it would need to be special to succeed at 35-80...

What benefits would the K-1 with a bag of F4 zooms have (if any) over a K-3 II with a bag of F2.8 zooms?
resolution
less noise
sharpness
narrower chromatic aberration
more compressed images(less Perspective distortion)
