Anybody know if the lens hood on the new DA 55-300 4.5-63 PLMcis reversible. I.e., when you're done shooting you can shorten the overall length by reversing the hood which mates with the barrel and securely locks into place like the Sigma 55-300 macro zoom. I know there's a term for this, but can't recall it at the moment. TIA much for any answers.

Am seriously considering one, but need the OA length to be as short as possible and don't want to carry around a detached hood. Most of my shooting is from a kayak and the less things go plop, the better.

Yes. It is reversible. Comes reversed in the box, even.

So this lens doesn't work on the K3 does it? The Pentax Australia site says that the old HD DA 55-300 has been replaced with this one. So is the old red band 55-300 now discontinued and replaced with a lens that won't work on any of their cameras other than the most recent ones?

It isn't. It is still on the Japan site as a current lens next to the new one:

Pentax will be dead if they discontinue all lenses with aperture levers as of now. Majority of Pentax users still use their old cameras. I bought my k-5II 2 years ago and I'm still very happy with it. My k-3II has more features but, when it comes to image quality I'd still go for my k-5II.

And they know it. They won't discontinue anything for a long time.

Yes, now that they have 1 (!) lens without aperture levers, they will immediately discontinue everything else

I bought a DA55-300 HD (the red band one) from an eBay seller here in Australia. When it arrived it was the new PLM version instead. The seller was very good about it and contacted Pentax Australia to see if they had the older one in stock to do a swap. They were told no stock available. I've also tried a couple of the bigger name bricks and mortar chains here and got told the same thing. Only the new model is available and they are told they can't get new orders for the older non-PLM model.

So even if it's not officially discontinued, it's basically discontinued. At least in my part of the world. Not happy.

Why in the world would you complain about getting the new PLM version over the older HD one?! Are you missing the electric screwdriver sound, or the slow AF?

Because the new lens does not work properly on the K3, that's why. As much as I like the size, weight and feel of the PLM version and the silent AF, I'd prefer to be able to shoot with a setting other than wide open all the time.

That's a pretty good reason

Just a thought... the "old" HD 55-300 WR is still readily available here in the UK, currently at 229 (about AUD $370)... I realise there'd be shipping and import duty to pay, but you might consider buying one from here?

Maybe Pentax Australia just stopped ordering the old one...
