The people still shooting them and the people who might want to buy one secondhand as a cheap entree into the DSLR world.

It's worrying to think that my K-5 might soon have forward compatibility issues.

K-3 or K-50 or K-5IIs are not old machines
K-5 IIs is almost 4 years old.

K100D was 2 years old when the KAF3 17-70mm f/4 came out.

The electronic aperture control is a significant change, making the K-mount as modern as any other (Nikon did this step last year).
Even tough for stills the aperture lever system works reasonably well.

Exactly. I'm not happy about it if it becomes the standard - but SDM/DC didn't take over every lens at that time either.

No, it did not. First mid-range lenses, then top-range ones, eventually entry-level ones.

ogl, I am definitely speaking of the K100D, not compatible with KAF3 lenses and which was only 2 years old when the first KAF3 lens came out, not the K100D Super (1 year younger and KAF3-compatible).

It also means those who liked to use modern lenses on film bodies will need to definitely kill the idea.
No way to use those even in manual focus with a e.g. Z-1.

True, but I have two DA zooms and both of them vignette horribly on film cameras to the point where it's not worth the bother. If they keep this new advance in DA land, nothing much to worry about - D-FA would be another matter.

I don't think al lenses will be made without a physical aperture coupling from now on.

The new aperture system will be a great money saving for those of us keeping the K5IIs as our regular camera.

How to use new lens with K-5IIs, for example? Will it AF? No aperture control at all? Explain me, please.

Wide open Or just use the HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED WR Reviews - DA Zoom Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database which will probably remain in production.

If the new aperture system works the same way as Canons, fitting the lens on to a body that doesn't have the new system, or on to an adapter that doesn't pass through the control data, will leave the Iris wide open at all times.

As a Cinematographer, a lens with no Iris ring is a pain in the ar$# when used on other cameras - such as fitting a K-mount lens to a M4/3's camera like the BMD Pocket Cine cam. Or for a Stills Photographer, fitting these new lenses to a Film era Pentax.

I expect this will mean that classic era lenses will retain their secondhand value.

They're a bit late. They need to bring a mirrorless sooner than in 5 to 7 years.
I fixed it for you,...
"They need to bring out a New Mirrorless sooner than in 5 to 7 years"

Preferably a K-01 successor with the video firmware issues corrected, and decent (Not Newson) ergonomics.
