HD PENTAX-DA 55-300mmF4.5-6.3ED PLM WR RE

Along with the K-70 will be released a new retractable version of the 55-300, with what looks like a new type of motor.

PLM: LM is linear motor, so this lens is optimised for contrast detect autofocus / autofocus during video.

P could be for Piezo.

I wonder why the maximum aperture changes on this. Screw Drive was the primary reason I've been putting off picking up the 55-300.

A motorized APS-C telephoto zoom cheaper than the 60-250 woud be great! This is really something that is missing now in the lenses lineup. The current 55-300 is a good lens, but the screwdrive can sometime drive you mad...

Pentax seems to have a remarkable capacity for releasing things completely different than what everyone expects. Of all the possible lenses that might be released at this point a retractable 55-300 was not what I was expecting...............

Smaller and lighter is what the article speculates.

Maybe this: "New model since the darkened slightly wide-angle end both the telephoto end, is the possibility of high likely to be more compact and lightweight lens."

It is a 55-300 but perhaps not the same 55-300 as we have been used to.

So that's how the new motor will be called? Hmm...

Agreed. The 55-300mm tends to hunt wildly at times.. zip zoop zip zoop zip zoop ..loud enough to scare off critters

having a zoom lock with different distance ranges would be super too in addition to the motor... just like on the D-FA 150-450. A premium feature, I know, but it would be helpful.

I always thought the DA 55-300 remarkably small and light for its range! And I don't really mind the screw mount; works fine for me.

If the new 55-300 is significantly shorter/smaller than the current version, say in the similar scale as the 18-50 vs 18-55, I will sell the 55-300 WR immediately and buy a new one when it is available.
That will make a wonderful kit for travel. I will take 15, 18-50, 50-300 plus 40/2.8 or 35 macro, or 70/2.8 or 100macro if portraits are needed. perfect kit!
way to go, pentax!

If this rumor is true I wonder whether it will be an addition to or a replacement for the existing 55-300. The 55-300 is a fantastic value: reasonably sharp; compact for a telephoto; reliable; inexpensive.

An addition, as is the 18-50 RE to the standard 18-55.

Lightweight 18-50 RE and 55-300 RE. Now we just need a WR K-02 to go with those.

It's the first with linear drive, optimized for live view AF and video.
New optic,new style,new amateur line for APS-C.
Not the last newbie for this year in APS-C.
Only the second APS-C camera could be to late for this year, maybe show only at Photokina.
But hey, most important for all is,Pentax is still in full action, without any pause.
Main target is fullframe, but the APS-C camera and lens roadmap is interesting and not a ping boring.
Till end of next year we get minimum of 6 or 7 new fullframe lenses and 4 APS-C lenses.
Best regards
