DPReview says various Sony cameras, including even the A6000, do have hybrid AF; I believe that is the method of the future.

It's my understanding that many cameras use both -- features like face detection require CDAF, but use PDAF for speed, particular for continuous AF. Perhaps the hybrid approach you're thinking of is PDAF for the initial large adjustment followed by PDAF for final micro-adjust of focus.

Just some thoughts...

It's the beginning of new direction of Ricoh. New video directed lenses without screw-drive with fast and noiseless motors.
It's more progressive way than KAF3. Like or not like, but it's right direction with K-mount.

New lens is 8.3 times faster at wide-angle and 1.7 times faster at telephoto end than old 55-300.
Don't forget - Ricoh will produce 6 new FF lenses and 4 new APS-C in 2016-2017.
If new FF primes will be made for video mode, silent, speedy and fast, with WR or AW, of course, it will be real BIG PROGRESS for Ricoh-Pentax.

@reh321, I have an HD 55-300 on my K-30 as well. Absolutely no reason for me to replace it. I couldn't afford to loose the half stop of light
That does NOT mean that this lens does not have a purpose and will be very useful for many people.
Don't worry, you would only loose 1/3 of a stop at the short end and 1/4 of a stop at the long end.

The joke which two times repeated is not joke anymore.

Faster = higher speed. Not with faster aperture.

We don't know yet that. For now with a single lens with an exact equivalent still available if you don't do video, there really no point to do anything about it. And if you want the advanced video features you need the K70, at this is the only camera with PDAF on the sensor. You may wait for the next flagship for more high end specs, through.

We can discuss the issue when other lenses are released. Will it be all lenses or only a few select video lenses at first ?

Also well if you plan to invest on theses new lenses and have a K3, yeah, you may have to updgrade.

Selling the old K3 to get the compatible K3-II so you can use theses new lenses should be a 300-400$ operation at worst today, and in 2 years should be a 100$ operation between 2 used models.

If you have a K5 or K5-II, I can't see how you could complain.
There's no reason to think Pentax/Ricoh are about to become a "video-centric" camera maker so I can't see why they'd be developing a separate lens lineup for video enhanced cameras. Given that, would there be any reason to spend a lot of time and money on an entirely new aperture control system if they didn't plan to broadly use it in future lens design?

They're not about to become a "video-centric" camera maker... they're just doing their best to stay up to date, and good video support is a requirement.

The electronic aperture control might be required for:
- video
- collapsible lenses like the 55-300 RE (depends on where the aperture is)
- fast fps shooting

So far is too early to speak about a new lens lineup, though of course I don't expect to be used only in one product.

Yes, that is exactly what I'm calling the method of the future: PDAF - CDAF - PDAF. No more front / back focus. I'm always amazed when someone will display pictures asking for help with focus, and the problem is obviously DOF, but someone just has to jump in first with front / back focus suggestions.

Yeah but CDAF is not possible in OVF mode. Unless you build in a small delay where the camera opens the shutter measures cdaf and than closes it again and actuates. Or it just uses an electronic shutter mode.

Or if you go the Sony translucent fixed mirror approach.
