I would like to see an update of it though.. with the HD coatings and a faster motor. If they can somehow make it sharper at f/2.8 that'd be super too

OTOH the 50-135 f/2.8 on FF is equiv to around 70-200 f/4 right? A FF 70-200 f/4 WOULD be nice imo.
With a minor mod the da* 60-250 f4 is full frame.

Even without the mod it is mostly just fine. No, it is excellent on the K-1!

What we don't know is how many of each lens remains in inventory.

OTOH, if there is excess stock on something they want to update they'll fire-sale it in the US.

Where can you buy it? I never see it listed new anywhere.

There are a few for sale in Holland: https://tweakers.net/pricewatch/141713/pentax-smc-fa-35mm-f-20.html

Usually there are also quite a few on ebay (used or new) from Japan, cheaper than the retail price of the production model. But you might as well get the DA 35mm F2.4 It's basically the same lens with newer coatings and the .4 difference is hardly noticable.

The FA35/2 is ridiculously priced given its plasticky build, though

Let me put this more plainly. Why would Pentax need to have a DFA 60-250 f4 and a DFA 70-200 f4? The difference in size and weight aren't likely to be huge unless there is a drop in optical performance. So while the 60-250 in present form is not a DFA lens it seems that it could be. Also the useable range without modification appears to be 60-200 by all accounts from k-1 users.

It is a nice lens. I have it, the FA31 ltd, and the SMC da 40. I like the da 40 better than the 35 perhaps due to size. I previously owned the da 35 f2.4 and like the FA 35 slightly better.

If you don't like the FA35 construction (not feeling sturdy enough I guess) don't ever hold a DA35/2.4
