The 4k chips are available. Maybe they could use the sensor in portrait mode so up and down would be less distorted.

Having three lenses would bring much better image quality. Theta now has two square sensors for 360. With three sensors you would have to make then in a 2:3 format in portrait to cover 360. Starting with the same sensor width you more then double the sensor surface. You would also need a larger battery. That would make the Theta much more expensive, but also a better tool.

The Theta s has two 12mp 1/2.3 " sensors which are 4:3(already in portrait mode) Small sensors are always 4:3. 3:2 is format adapted to 35mm film dimensions.

Interesting link. The tear down of the Theta s 360 Ricoh Theta S 360° Camera Teardown

To cover 180 degrees field of view probably a square is used out of the sensor.

It takes two circular images

so not a square but a sphere.

It seems to me a three lens/sensor version would need an entire redesign of the optical group

And what if Delta would simply mean a big step forward compared to actual product / or to 360• competition ?
No need to add a lens for that

The design they have now with mirror doesn't work for three lenses. It's a clever design, so just using a bigger sensor would also make sense. Or just adding 4k video and leave the rest the same.

Theta Delta? Delta is often used for triangular shapes. River delta, delta flyer. Could it have three lenses?

just one more letter and they will get in trouble with some college/university fraternity.
They could have named it ΘΔΣ

Three lenses could work even with mirrors, but it would be a different and bulkier construction. Though, i guess its not so likely they would go this way.

4K video sound like a very useful upgrade.

No word about WR/AW or IP68. I hoped that would be a feature of the next Theta.

No word about an accessible card slot or exchangeable battery. I hoped for that too. (Theta S have an internal non user accessible microSD slot)

Yeah, IP68 garanteed, and 4K 30f/s sounds fairly good enough

Occam says Delta only means this is the 4th iteration of Ricoh Theta.

Alpha
Beta
Gamma
Delta

Of course Delta is also the symbol for change or difference in math speak and spread in hedge fund money talk, so . . . Nah. 4th version.

The theta sign is symmetric 2 sided and round, the delta is 3 sided. If it gets three lenses, then it will probably be named Ricoh Delta, not Ricoh Theta Delta S.

Adam, kenspo and asahiman must be laughing so much of my/ours wild guesses.
