Originally posted by monochrome It is still a recession in Japan, China is very slow, commodity-based Emerging Markets are suffering from price collapses, Europe is stagnant and USA is great if you are rich and working but flat for middle class consumers.
What rational company would load the boat with new offerings under those circumstances?
The boat needs to stay loaded or hungry retailers will soon start selling the next guy's produce instead of yours. The key is to stick to what you know you can sell and lay off the risky stuff, I would guess. That said, there is always a market for those with flair and a sensible business plan, so one or two of the new products announced at Photokina by A.N. Other will doubtless do very well even if some prove to have been a little over-optimistic. New products or new outfits can get a clearer run during rough economic times because the main players have all pulled in their horns and are not out there seeing off newcomers. Next thing the main players know, if they aren't careful, the newcomers have knocked them for six.
These trade fairs are strange beasts, and very very expensive for a company. Their benefits must be extremely hard to quantify. It would be completely understandable if some of the big beasts in the camera world simply decided to give most of them a miss altogether.
