I find it strange that some people think pricing is abritrary...

I'm going to buy the one that listed as "Used - Like New" for $600 (plus $10 shipping) from a Marine & RV company. I'm sure that's perfectly legit!

Because the impression I get is, you think if one doesn't see the value in spending the extra money, they are poor. There is another option. It being if one doesn't see the value in spending the extra money, it is because they don't see the value in spending the extra money. Being rich or poor has nothing to do with that personal decision.

The only way it would actually come into effect is if they were living hand to mouth, spending all they had when they had it. But that is a terrible way to live when you have a choice (such as with buying hobby cameras). One bump in the road and they are selling their precious camera to pay their mortgage/rent/other bills.

As you said, for most here it is a question of how high do we price our 'wants.' If a commercial shooter was looking at this, they wouldn't even strongly question the price. They'd just buy because it is a business expense. Then again, how many full time photographers do we have actively posting on the forum? Most of us are full time in some other field.
Overprices refers to the value of the item for its cost not if an individual can afford it or not. If a company made a luxury motorhome that beat the competition by $50000 is would be wrong in saying it was overpriced. The Diana F cameras are overpriced and you can get two or three of them for $200 which you might be able to afford. My wife and I have three, two of which we got used because for what you pay for what you get it is not a good value for the dollar. The K1 appears to be a better value for the dollar then its completion hence it should not be considered overpriced. You might think that the manufacturer and the distributor and the retailer should or must keep the costs down to what you are willing to pay for it but they have costs to cover and a profit to make. A professional would consider if it was worth spending the money on as even if it is a business expense you still need to pay out money for it and that comes from your profits or your take home pay. It does not work out to be free for them either.

It appears that the Pentax world is bifurcating into two camps.

1. Those who shoot Pentax APS-C bodies and inexpensive lenses.
2. Those who shoot K1's and expensive premium glass.

Sometimes these groups don't see things the same.

Example, group #2 sees the K1 at a huge bargain at $2000. Group #1 thinks the K1 is overpriced at any price that they can't afford.
Group 3 shoot Pentax APS-C camera with some premium glass (DA 15 and DA 70 and Sigma 70-200 2.8) and do not think that the K1 is overpriced, just not what I want or need.

In Canada the price of the K1 is about the same as the price of the *istD when it came out and I did think all digital cameras were too expensive for what they gave but that is always the case with new technologies. Also don't conclude that if one did not move up to the k1 they shoot inexpensive glass or are too cheap to go FF. I was just talking to my friend this morning who shoots Nikon D800 and D4 as well as has access to use the D3 and D2X for his own use and just ordered the XPro. And I do not think those who are planning on buying the replacement for the K3II are going to be using inexpensive lenses.

One should never assume and one should never generalize.

Thanks for putting words in other people's mouths. As for myself, saying I can't/won't afford a K-1 and saying the K-1 is overpriced are not the same thing at all. I just would wish/hope that, as time passes, the price would eventually go down, and not up! As of late, Pentax pricing has been going up significantly. It looks like the K-3 II is also going up about $150 now, and lens (street) prices have also gone up significantly during the course of the summer. For example, the D-FA 100mm WR used to routinely sell for around $400-420, has now been sitting around $550 since July, with no sign of a return to its former pricing.

Of course, this is hardly bad news for people who use camera gear as status symbols...
I make my living with my cameras, and therefore don't think twice about spending good money for professional tools for my job.

Brexit: What I got wrong, and what is still uncertain, Scott Sumner | EconLog | Library of Economics and Liberty

"Recent data have reinforced optimism that the domestic economy is weathering the aftermath of the vote. The construction industry unexpectedly grew in September, while a manufacturing gauge jumped to its highest level in more than two years. A Citigroup Inc. index tracking economic surprises in Britain is near a three-year high.
After four years of underperformance, U.K. shares have become the highlight of Europe, when looked at in local currency terms. The FTSE 100 has surged 14 percent in 2016, while the regional Stoxx Europe 600 Index is still down 5.4 percent."

The UK will be fine. They were the 5th largest economy prior to the EU and nothing has changed. Once the markets adjust the UK will probably be better off economically. Anyone raising prices immediately after the Brexit vote is simply using it as an excuse to raise prices.

Clearly the retailer and manufacturer both are not going to sell their product at a rate at which they aren't going to turn a profit at some level (be it straight sales to retailers, sales on other items as a result of offering the product on discount, or on marketshare in hopes of making a bigger profit later on with a larger customer base). But that is not what I meant.

What I meant is, I look at a product and I value its worth to me. If the price from the seller is over that, it is overpriced to me. It doesn't matter if it costs Ricoh 1999 dollars to offer a 2000 dollar camera. It doesn't matter if I have 4000 in my camera budget. If I'm only willing to give 1500 dollars for it, then no deal.
Clearly at 1800 USD (now 2000 due to currency value change), Ricoh is turning some sort of profit. The Nikon D810 at 1000 dollars more has more fluff added to the price. It has to. I doubt it is 1000 dollars more since Nikon likely has more expenses. But the point being they inflate the price. They can, They're Nikon. Just like Canon does too... Hugely. Alpha dog. Look at what the 5D III is selling for. And it is a 4 and a half year old design. It is going for 2500 USD .. TODAY. outrageous.

As a result, the consumer base has been used to shelling out at that level. But times.. they are a changing..

There's nothing to be super sad about if you already have one!

Unless you are selling something on eBay in the auction format with no reserve and a $1 starting bid, there is at least something arbitrary about a price.

Fine, but your use of the word overpriced makes it meaningless to anyone else. Standardization of terms allows for clearer communications. What does outrageous mean to you?
