Confusing verbiage used in the Download Instructions:

"Only PENTAX K-3 users are permitted to download the firmware update."

"This software may only be used by users who own the PENTAX K-3."

Shouldn't this be better said: "Applies only to the K3."

Even that leaves unnecessary ambiguity regarding its specific applicability to the K3ii.
It's probably meant to assuage you of two things:
  • You shouldn't try to reverse engineer this firmware update.
  • You should return to the downloads oage if you want the K3ii version of the firmware.

You've just answered the question "I wonder why Ricoh/Pentax bothered to provide the update for K-3 owners".

I had the DA L but I sold it with my K-5 to my father. The Sigma 150-500 is too big to carry on long walks, so the 55-300 RE would be a good compliment to the 18-135 for walks.

Yep and smart of them to get that firmware update out just before the sales start...

Ditto for me too buddy !! The users selling their kit to fund K-1's are the winners in the resale stakes

It would have been nice if Ricoh had said "we are working on a firmware upgrade for the K3" a month ago when I got sent the new 55-300 PLM instead of the older DA WR one I ordered. I wouldn't have returned it then and imported the screw drive model from the US.

I have just updated my K-3 to the latest version 1.30 and everything went OK. I will test and see if there are any noticeable improvements, other than the already mentioned kaf4 compatibility.

P.S. I was pretty nervous during the whole process, given the fact that firmware 1.33 had bricked my K-7 exactly two years ago. I'm very glad this time everything went fine.

I wonder if they still want to make a software update for the K-30 and by want, I really mean want, because when the K-50 receives the update, nobody can't say that the K-30 has a hardware limitation.
This update could mean in the future the 3rd life of my K-30, since the aperture control died I have been using with my two vintage aperture ring lenses on manual mode.
A good standard zoom would be great to make this great camera greater again. I believe it can be a bit work for Pentax, but it is this kind of service that made the brand reputation and that kept it loyal until today. Even after having a broken camera for a well known issue, that unfortunately in Germany would cost almost 400$ to repair, I decided to keep all my lenses and buy a K-3 instead of selling everything and go Canikon.

Well my Black Friday 55-300 PLM arrived today so I had a quick trial with the K3. No pictures just balance and focus near-far etc.

Spot on - locked on every time - nothing fast-moving mind but seems to work flawlessly so far, feels nice on the camera body.
Collapsed down it's just slightly larger than the 18-135; fully extended, it's the same at 300 as the 80-320 at 320.
It's so quiet.
I will be testing it out fully during the "Single in December" challenge.

Any chance this update will be rolled out to the K5ii?

I'm sure Ricoh will let us know around the same time they let you know.

Who knows? They didn't let anything leak about this update so I wouldn't say it can't happen but I'd say it is as unlikely as this seemed to be.
