But I would like to know if it makes a sensible backup service that will expand with me.
I do need a cloud service and if it is truly unlimited space then its a better option than the 1Tb Dropbox at nearly twice the price.
Any idea about the upside and downside?
I guess I question the need to access my entire library from any device, anywhere, any time by radio. A 1Tb external Drive costs somewhere around 1 year of service these days. I can carry one in a pocket.

Keyword being backup.

Maybe at some point, if the two Ricoh divisions do talk to each other, new and/or existing Ricoh/Pentax owners will get the service discounted or even free. Or free for a year after a new purchase. You never know.

Yup, this has nothing to do with Ricoh Imaging by the looks of it.
Yep...and the expectation that it should dovetail into Ricoh Imaging products ignores the intended market of the initiative.

When Ricoh innovations can make decent apps and software maybe they should be involved more with the camera division. Software support of Pentax camera's is really weak. Those apps are a hassle and DCU (silkypics) looks like it is still the nineties.

Well it is said before. There is no relation between Ricoh-Imaging and any of the other Ricoh Enterprises. Sad, but true.

I don't think that this service wil l last for many years. There are plenty offers. It's just another $50 a year offering that won't survive.

It's an in-app offer, but in any event, RAW file transfer over WiFi or even RAW file transfer to Cloud services is not very attractive to me until speeds match USB3 (I'd even settle for the fastest USB2).
