I don't know who's doing Theta, but insert them in the list and the Theta V announced today is 7 months.

4K live streaming with snapdragon processor in Theta V, means 4K and image processing will eventually make it into one of the next Pentax cameras.

Undoubtedly Pentax is still on the Socionext m-7m it already had in the prime III despite them claiming a prime IV. 1080i gives it away. Maybe they should switch to Qualcom snapdragon for dslr's as well.
They didn't use the socionext m-8m which can do 360 and 4k in the Theta V. It has a ARM Cortex A5 MP 400MHz architecture. The Snapdragon 625 (lowest one to have 4k and probably in the Theta) has a cortex a53 architecture which is much more modern. Mobile phone chip makers are generations ahead of Socionext.

The factor in DSLR are not capabilities, but power consuption. The M-8m for example is stated for 1,3W/h power consumption when shooting 4k @30fps.

Now you consider you can empty a Samsung S7 phone batterie containing around 11W (3000MAh for 3.85v) playing pokemon Go in 1h more or less.

Power computing is great, but camera don't need it. it just need specialised skills that revolve around image treatment and data flow.

Yes, it is sad that you think the Q is a dead end.

The history of photography is a progressive shrinking of sensor sizes.
Remember that our "full frame" was once considered to be "miniature".

Most smart phones use a variant of the ARM architecture - a real full-function computer.

I'm sure many people on this forum would be thrilled by the perspective of Pentax being invigorated, investing a lot in new factories, tools, products and dedicated stores, launching new product lines (such as mirrorless cameras ) and more generally becoming the Asian Leica.

Would they be equally thrilled if the price of the K-1's successor, or its successor's successor, went up to $6,895 with 24x36 prime lenses being priced between $1,445 and $10,995?
I expect not, but my K-1 would be thrilled... to learn that it had no prospect of being superceded barring a BIG lottery win (and perhaps not even then; if I'm going to spend that much on camera gear, might as well go medium-format).

My feelings toward YouTube photographers with Leica systems are mixed - most of all, I am struck by the realisation that in one camera and one lens in their hands, they potentially hold more monetary value than all my gear put together. The photographers try to come across as your everyday everyman, but those cameras are very much not your everyday everyman's thing.

Yet having a camera and lens lineup in your sig that is a mile long is everyday everyman?

I don't think everyday everyman even owns a DSLR. everyday everyman owns a smartphone or maybe not but has a point and shoot... if any camera at all.

Who knows ? Maybe this is why the K3-ii successor takes a bit more time than expected to be announced... A switch in the processor hardware would certainly take more time to develop than the usual more of the same with some extra features.

The Socionext M-8M includes a built-in ARM processor although it's a low-spec one to save power.

But the core of the M-8M uses specialized circuits that are much faster and more efficient at doing specific image processing tasks in real time.

Snapdragon is likely cheaper / computing power thanks to NRE being spread over the volumes sold compared to socionext plateform.
Theta likely being the right product to start with because Theta is technically closer to a phone (has less controls than a DSLR with interchangeable lenses).
