I'm old enough to remember when the K-5II came out , and all the people who didn't like it said they would wait for the "real" K-5 successor. That happened again with the K-3 (it needed all the features of the K-3, but with a 16MP sensor). Then again when the K-3II came out. (And the K-50/K-S2.) It sounds like we're on that same merry-go-round - the "REAL K-3II replacement" should have everything the K-1 has (and more!), but with a K-3-ish sensor (and price tag!). I don't think you're going to get that "real K-3II replacement".

So far as looks go, the KP looks like a baby K-1 to me. I guess that makes it 2016 Retro. Have to wait to see what's under the hood...

Is it just me or does the rear LCD seem smaller than the K-3's?

That top hump is likely to cause problems for some 3rd party flashes (<cough>Yongnuo<cough>)...

I'm not sure I have got your point.
There is one and only battery grip (D-BG7) and there are three interchangeable handgrips (small O-GP167, medium O-GP1671 and large O-GP1672) for the camera body itself.
I am already missing the grip of my K-3.
Why?
Because it has an indention for the middle finger that is positioned above the center of gravity of the cam. Thus, it can help stabilizing the cam - a bit like a gimbal when you let the K-3(II) "hang" from the indention. Ingenious design.
And nothing like that on the KP. Three grips to choose from but none of them offers this feature. Too bad.

The display layout above suggests that k-70 and k-1 are the end of that series no space for a third camera.

The k-1 is replacing k-3ii and the KP filling a new (for recent Pentax) range finder type niche.

Kind of makes sense. Would be a bit cramped fitting another apsc in there considering the k-70 features not only the space available for display.

That would be HORRIBLY cumbersome. Try to switch AE area on any current pentax DSLR to find how easy is to turn these levers around buttons..
AE area switch, on any current Pentax DSLR you say? Take a moment to review the current Pentax DSLRs. Such a switch was last seen in the K-5 series and in the 645Z, being replaced in the K-3 with a button.

The 'real' K5 replacement was the K3. It offered all the features of the K5 and more, for a similar price, and had a very similar look (to most it actually looks almost identical). So I don't understand why you find it ludicrous that the K3's 'real' successor couldn't do that?

In many regards the KP seems to be a step back compared to the K3. Why would someone want to buy a new camera with the same AF system as four years ago, only one SD slot etc., all for the same price?

Too small.
Just right size!!

I've been waiting for something more like the size of my Super Program, before Canon's T-90 convinced everyone to go big.

Unfortunately, money is really tight for us right now .....

The "KP" seems so shrug-worthy one would almost suspect it is a diversion...

And you definitely don't know the KP. Whatever. The forum will be much nicer without your trolling. Boriscleto'd™

Guess WHY it was removed on K3/K1..... oh wait.. it was un-ergonomic on all the IstD, K10D, K20D, K7, 645D, K5, K5II, 645Z....

And K1 + K3 have wheel lock lever there, that basically has no use at all.

I find it interesting that the D-BG7 battery grip looks to only work with the Large hand grip on the KP...
If you wanted to add the D-BG7 battery grip, but use the Small or Medium hand grip, it looks like it won't be seamless. Sure it might still fit, but there would be a bump going from the hand grip to the battery grip.

I find those grips curious as they seem to be just padding. To not fill out the space in the grip with electronics is quite strange on a camera that looks like an effort to be compact.

I like the compact nature of it if it fits in my hand and works ergonomically it looks like a camera for me. Unlikely to buy it though as my k3ii is very good for me and the GPS a feature o won't be without anymore.

Pentax cameras are funny. Compared to say Fuji they are freaks of design. Look at all those humps and protrusions.

The do however tend to be great to use!

I look at all these grips, and I can't help but think that somebody at Pentax HQ got himself a 3D printer.

Based on pictures it looks like K-S1 kind of designer's joke. Waiting for the specs...
