Over here, KP is the name of a well-known brand of salted or barbecued peanuts. KP also make Hula Hoops, Skips, Frisps, Space Raiders and Discos, among other snacks.

They have a site in the wonderfully named Ashby-de-la-Zouch.

An almost unlimited combination of letters and odd names for Pentax to choose from for their future cameras. The Pentax PS or Pentax Skips featuring Frisps technology could be a winner!

It's a camera made of heavy metal.

Does anyone know, at what stage in the production process would they typically register the model name?

Would this be early days, as in "We don't want to start tooling up for a new model until we own the name" - which means it could be a good long while before we see one for sale?

Or are cameras more like movies and books that may not get their final name until the near end of the process, after most of the work has been done?

Whether it's Kyoto Protocol (energy efficient camera), North Korea (ultra oppressive camera), Katy Perry (pop hit camera that doesn't write its own lenses) or Kim Possible, I'm sure it'll be something special.
A Kenny Powers edition would make waves in the DSLR world.

I presume a lot of model names / trade marks were registered well in advance and they then draw from the stock. As for the telecom authorities, the time lag between their registration of a device equipped with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth and the announcement of this device varies a lot; for instance, K-1 was registered by Postel on March 30, 2016, i.e. more than one month after its official launch.

In the case of the K-70, it was reported as registered with the Korean authorities May 19, specs leaked on June 6, announced on June 8, and shipping on July 22.

My guess is that the KP, whatever it actually is, will be announced early or mid February, in time to be exhibited CP+.

Maybe it refers to the mount: P for PLM and the body will not have an aperture block at all and only use PLM lenses. Which would mean a whole slew of PLM lenses released at the same time.

I just read some speculation on a Japanese forum that KP might be meant to evoke similarities to the Pentax SP, implying that it might be retro styled. Sounds somewhat plausible.
