Aside. From the mz-s which is the last camera to have it they did away with the mechanical,linkage in the mid 90s, certainly it was in part a cost cutting thing. . The reason you need to stop down is the missing linkage. Since the last lenses produced using this Linkage were made in the early eighties and af was rapidly killing interest. Crippled mounts exist in Nikon as well, you pay a premium to use the older ai mount and you need to upgrade original f mount to ai to use them. Canon abandoned their mount altogether which allowed them to develop the mount that they have, which is better suited to af and let them focus on developing that tech. Passed a lot of people off at the time but it was wise in the long run. Same thing happened at Minolta but they never developed the market the way canon did
So after this long winded comment yes they could add it, but it adds cost . Also what monetary incentive is there to revive a change made 20 year plus back. They want you to buy modern lenses
